Perfectly positioned within Melbourne’s famous sandbelt courses, Keysborough is a demanding and challenging layout set to test professional and club golfers alike.

Constructed on 220 acres of natural bushland the course is a brilliant piece of engineering design, deserving of its Australian Open rating. Keysborough’s uniqueness stems from its air of informality. Friendly smiles greet you and the prevailing atmosphere is bright and cheerful.

I played at Keysborough yesterday and to be fair I decided to give an updated version from my last visit in August, 2010.

I can say that it was not the same golf course. Fairways on every hole were in pristine condition. After playing at Kingston Heath and Huntingdale earlier this week I believe that Keysborough’s fairways are just as good as the highly rated sand belt courses.

Bunkers I found to be in great condition. I played out of quite a few (unfortunately) but my lies were always good and I felt confident that there was an even cover of sand in each.

Greens were good and relatively quick (particularly on down slope putts) but not too quick. I heard someone say that staff had told them that they hadn’t mown the greens too short on our day as there had been some concern with them. I believe if they had been done they would have been like lightning.

I noticed some new works being conducted on a number of holes to front approaches to the greens. Unfortunately this just happened to be and will only improve the course for the better in the future.

Obviously my previous review was made after heavy rains around that time. I can say that I still recommend this course to anyone and rate it highly when comparing it with Kingston Heath and Huntingdale’s condition earlier this week.

After seeing that this course hasn’t been rated for a while during the wetter months of the year, and having played it today I have to say I was dissappointed. There has been a bit of rain lately but nothing outragously heavy or consistent.

The local rule was preferred lies on closely mown areas with one club length. It was hard to find one fairway where there wasn’t a’sloppy’ area that was roped off or in disrepair. I would have thought with all their dams/lakes that they have that drainage would have been improved and the fairways in better condition. God help them if we get a week of heavy rain.

The 17th hole (par 5) is closed and shortened to a temporary par 3. Looking at the fairway they are re-sowing it or it is just soo boggy with the rain, it is unplayable. Bunkers were displaying signs of pooled water or which had drained away but then left sand packed/muddy lies. A number of bunkers I played out of today had not been raked and were, I consider, average condition. (This may be because we played Monday morning and the green keepers hadn’t had time to start work on these matters??)

Greens and tees were good (with exception of the temporary tee on 17 which was on the edge of a sloping fairway)

It’s been a number of years since I’ve played here but rating it on it’s current condition this week, it loses a few marks from my last visit. Definately a course to be played in the fairer weathered months when the grass is growing.

I played this course with the hope that it was as described, a course that was under rated and fits in well with some of better course around Melbourne. I was dissappointed. Perhaps my expectations were too high. The course is well layed out, greens were superb. Tees and fairways were a little sparse with their coverage and were not mown well at all. Worth a look, and is probably better than the average course, but perhaps look elsewhere for a higher class course.

Located within Melbournes famous sandbelt, Keysborough is a tough but rewarding course. Your are rewarded for being straight off the tee, though it is hard with strategically placed bunkers along the lush, green fairways. Greens are fairly flat, however still challenging. Keysborough does not often spring to mind when you think of Melbournes Sandbelt courses, and i think it should receive more recognition than it does.

If you haven’t yet played Keysborough then you’re missing out on one of the best courses in Melbourne. Every hole is a challenge but if you’re straight off the tee then birdie is not out of the question. With it’s many water supplies around the course nearly always full (even in these drought like conditions!), the tees, green and fairways are always in great condition. A must play!

With water a big problem in Melbourne the fairways at Keysborough are amongst the best in the state. Bunkers are well placed along fairways to keep you honest and the greens run true.
