Lang Lang Golf Club is commonly referred to as the “Augusta of Gippsland”. It has 18 classic holes set among commanding gum trees with tight fairways that demand accuracy and not necessarily distance from the tee.

The course was designed in 1963 by former Australian Open winner, George Naismith and takes advantage of sensational bay views from the 1st tee. It is built on a sand-belt and provides excellent conditions all year round. The fairways are couch and a new watering system has enabled lush green fairways throughout the long summer months.

The club has a full bar and dining facilities and visitors are most welcome. Colin Casey manages the golf shop and provides a great choice of equipment and apparel. The visiting player often feels he is the only golfer on the course such is the seclusion offered by the tall eucalypts, definitely no ducking for cover when playing this golf course.

Green fee players are welcome to play at anytime, except Saturday morning.

Played on Sunday in an ISG social group of 8. Weather was mild and windless. The course …….despite floods raging in country Victoria and lots of recent rain ………. was in perfect nick. A quick bit of history for those inclined.

Lang Lang Golf Club dates back to the 1920’s when it was a 9 hole course played on land made available by various farmers in the region. This transient lifestyle encouraged members to try and locate a site that would provide stability and allow for improvements to the standard of course presentation.

In the early 1960’s suitable Crown land was found near Nyora and a leasing agreement entered into between the Golf Club and the Government. In 1963 former Australian Open Golf Champion, George Naismith offered his services without charge to design a course that would stand the test of time. Naismith’s original hand drawn sketch of the course he planned still hangs proudly in the clubhouse.

Back to the course review ……. and Lang Lang, the self proclaimed Augusta of Gippsland, opens with a mid length par 4 of 368 metres from an elevated tee. The hole only slightly doglegs around a huge tree on the approach to the green, but if you’re not on the correct side of the fairway off the tee, the tree will block you from the hole.

While everything is laid out before you on the 1st tee, and it all looks benign, if you don’t hit it to the correct area, 5 seconds later you will know that par may already be out of the question.

This is the sort of course Lang Lang is.

It doesn’t look hard, and shouldn’t be hard, but stray into the wrong areas and it will bite you. The course features lots of doglegs and bends, so positioning is key around here.

The design of the course is very well thought out. Our group of 4 struggled for par on a couple of the short par 4’s, which went to prove you don’t need to have huge long holes in order to cause a golfer headaches.

Lang Lang was designed back in the 60’s and using 60’s length holes, yet it is as relevant, and as hard today as it was back then, and is a real tribute to the ageless design skills. While a lot of courses designed back then are now outdated due to long hitting, Lang Lang’s clever design has kept it relevant and a fair golfing test.

Fairways on the tree lined course are immaculate, and even the rough is not to penalising if you stray off line .. just keep out of the trees.

The course bunkering serves a purpose, to offer some risk reward, to make various pin positions easy or hard, and the tempt the golfer to give it his best. While they aren’t full of sand like St Kilda beach, they are fairly consistent in depth …. aside from being a bit compacted at the moment by all the recent rains.

The greens are in superb nick and are playing very consistently around the course. If you can read the subtle breaks you’ll have a good day out on them.

There no long par 3’s on the course, they average about 145, but the par 4s range from 403 metres right down to 288 metres, and are all well designed and thought out. Toss in a couple of short par 5’s which are achievable, and you have a great mix of holes. Lang Lang is not what you’d call a hilly course by any means either, it’s a relaxing walk through a lovely country course.

If you want to have a relaxing enjoyable day on a golf course that offers something for everyone (and at under $30 on the weekend), yet can challenge your game ……. I’d certainly recommend Lang Lang.

Played at Lang Lang about 2 months ago and the course was in brilliant condition. Fairways were fine, great course for the average player through to the serious ones. The only draw back was you weren’t allowed to smoke on the deck but you weren’t allowed to take your beer into the smoking area….

PROS

  • Good condition
  • Challenging without being ridiculously hard

This place requires a lot of work. Place has obviously gone downhill in recent years. Avoid.

Good Country course within easy drive of south eastern suburbs. Tight layout, but not too long and no big hills. Pretty quite during the week. Felt like we had the course to ourselves. Couch program is doing well and greens rolled great. Went back with my beginner son on a Sunday afternoon and it was great because there were no groups around to worry him. We’ll definitely do it again. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. I agree. Beer was great. Top track. I liked it. If you had a handicap here, it would stand up anywhere.

Drought conditions aside. The course is in top nick.

It really makes you work for your score. Much needed works are being carried out to improve conditions (extensive couch program). But the fairways are still tight and greens fast.

If you want to play a challanging course at a reasonable rate ( To play or join) Take a 30 min drive from cranbourne Still rated one of the best in gippsland

Beers good too!

Have played here a couple of times. This is the place you need to hit straight, get off the farways and you will be searching for the ball. Greens are in a good condition and there are a few that are challanging if you miss read them. I hear that the place had money problems, would be a shame if this place is lost. Well worth the drive and the day out.Suggest that you try it.
