Longyard Golf Club

IN: COURSE DIRECTORY | REGION: New England, NSW | USER RATING: (4.0) | Add A Review

Rapidly gaining a reputation as an exceptional test of golf, Longyard Golf Club is a real country gem, just outside the metropolitan region of Tamworth. It is a Harrison/Norman designed course, which boasts Santa Anna Couch fairways along with bent grass greens. Longyard was also the venue for the 2002 NSW Masters.

What an awesome course. Conditioning is something i don’t put too much emphasis on because it can change quickly, and it is at this course. Development galore adding real class to this amazing lay-out. Challenging but rewarding this course is long in parts and highly entertaining. Greg Norman design encorporates the amazing rolling greens that can leave you with some facinating putts! If this course was in Sydney, or on the sand strip in VIC you’d be paying $100 + to play here! I LOVE IT!

PROS

  • AMazing layout
  • True and challenging greens

Cons

  • Huge developments underway

Probably, Tamworthís more interesting course, not always up and down and links-style. Not the traditional links-style course as the 9th hole comes back to the clubhouse and not located near the coast, but apart from that, it has foot-long untouched rough, with thin covered fairways, which allows the drive to roll. Trees are not easily seen and can become a true test of golf in the heat; I think I saw 3 large trees on the GC with many other small native vegetation to negotiate with.

Measures 6239m Par 72 with 10 Par 4s, 4 Par 5s and 4 Par 3s. It boasts probably the best finishing 3 holes Iíve ever played on. Hole 16 par 3 over water, Hole 17 long par 5 around a lake and the 18 a testy par 4 around the same lake.

Hazards include water (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 16th, 17th, 18th) and bunkers protecting big fairway hitters and greens. The wind also plays a LARGE part, as in many links courses.

Played on 20/11/05 (Sunday) and paid $22 green fees for 18 holes, and it costs $18 weekdays for social/visitor green fees. Better to play on the weekend here, as Tamworth GC is quite full with locals social comps running until 3pm. Plenty of luxury home developments along this course, which reminds me of Macquarie Links International GC in Sydneyís SW.

THis is a very challenging course with a lot of potential for the future. Development galore going on at the moment. A tough test of golf but fully worth it. Some really challenging holes and if the wind blows hang on to your hats!
