The Links at Barwon Heads regularly rates in Australia’s top 30 courses. The nearby Bass Strait and sand dunes along with the weather conditions provide a links reminiscent of famed Scottish links. The undulating terrain, in harmony with the natural features of the land will ensure that you will remember time spent at Barwon Heads.

While not especially long the Links will test golfers of all standards with cleverly positioned hazards, subtle slopes and the greens along with challenging tee positions. The wind ensures that the course rarely plays the same way twice in the one week.

The turf is maintained to the highest standard and in the summer a local species of couch grass dominates the fairways. In the cooler months the species of Poa Annua provides an excellent fairway cover.

greens The greens are predominantly of Poa Annua and are maintained to the highest standard. It is our practice that the greens be cut for guests every morning, so a true and fast surface is virtually assured.

Played Barwon Heads on the 11th March 2011.
We had 2 groups of generally social golfers with varying degrees of ability. We couldn’t have asked for a better day for golf and the course didn’t disappoint. Whilst not overly long, it offered up all sorts of challenges but it was not overly penal either. There are some really fun holes, especially the par 3’s.
Whilst it does have a bit of the old world feel to it, the only sort of stuffiness we got was a request to have shirts checked in, no big deal at all and the members we did meet were very friendly (including their dog!)
Really enjoyed the course and look forward to playing again.

Played here in Sept 2010 with high expectations given that it is rated so high on the list of most golf magazines, so I wanted to see for myself what all the noise was about. Given that the course was being cored, I was still keen to play a round.
Verdict……what a let down.
How this course is rated so high is rubbish. Just goes to show when you pay the right people, anything is possible. Those reviews in those golf magazines must be enjoying their new found wealth…
Barwon Heads GC was enjoyable enough to play (personally, front nine better than the back nine, but to be honest, very few holes made a lasting impression on me. Nothing more to say.
As mentioned in previous reviews, I did witness a incident where 2 members, approach other players to comment on their brand of attire.
You just have to read those reviews left by mcallister, stubrobrih and scarlett all so, to understand how members carry on.
When the proshop stocks the clothing "GANT" as their may supplier,
enough said. ( Not having a go at Gant, I like some of their clothes, but in a proshop, No.)

I would definately recommend 13th Beach versus the BHGC. Less squatocracy, more geniune golf.

Cons

  • The attititude of the staff
  • The attitude of the members

I played this course on the 9/10/09 after reading the reviews rang ahead to see if any course work was being done or if there were any temp greens (none to report).

So I headed across on the ferry looking forward to playing a classic top notch links course( having played Birkdale, Hoylake, princes Royal lytham, Royal County down, Royal Portrush, Hayling Island, Lahinch and a few others), with an open mind.

It is expensive and it is overated compared to all of the above in its layout, interest and its design.

At best it is quirky and quaint but a great course never mind great links course it is not.

Grainy, small greens like up turned breafast bowls to make putting difficult do not make a classic links course. Classic links have big smooth greens with swales and options to play lots of different shots.

This is a Australian try at a links course and it comes up short at every hole.
The staff were nice though and did not appear as bad as the other guys portraid, however the price is high for the entertainment value.

Overall a good course but not a great course and certainly not a true links just a quaint quirky seaside wannabe.

I played here on a Friday and started on the 10th. I had a free run of the course all day long, it was like a dream come true. The course has such a great layout and a high quality feel. The fairways and greens were lush. The greens rolled true and were a good speed, not overly quick. I enjoyed every hole. The dogleg 9th hole was particularly challenging.

As for the attitude problems a previous reviewer mentioned, the professional running the pro shop was really nice to me. He was happy to answer any questions and direct me to the practise facilities. The members playing the course were nice as well. I didn’t go into the clubhouse so I can’t comment about that.

Overall, this really is a special course and I see why it rates as one of the top courses in the country.

Played September 14, 2008. Went with a group of 16, played on an extremely windy day, course was in sensational condition and a difficult challenge. Everyone really enjoyed the course although conceded it would not be overly difficult on a benign day (mainly single figure markers). Can’t agree with the comments about the staff, couldn’t have been nicer to us. We did the play/stay package, breakfast and dinner included. Fantastic meal in the committee room.

We played in the week of Monday 25 June. The attitude problems and vague sense of a lack of welcome are still evident, esp in the wierd-ar*e Pro Shop. The main problem and still way too common is that these places are prepared to take your dollars($70) and full buck for a cart WITHOUT Telling you the full Maintenance Team is on the course sanding and scraping the greens – which therefore were BGrade Public Course rate. They knew they would be doing it – they just dont tell the punters and that isa an attitude that is about 2 generations out of date – and that sums up Barwon Heads. The round is secondary to the lack of respect to the golfer!

PROS

  • Good original links style corse

Cons

  • Old style attitudes to the punter and damn maintenance crews

Set just beyond the township it self this course has something special, no high rise apartments, just an old club house and 18 beautiful holes this course was built before titanium drivers so it is short by todays standards, the holes have been carved out of the sand dunes they sit on and with the right wind still very challenging, the 3rd hole is it’s signature hole running side by side 13th beach. An experience in it’s self.

I played this course on Tuesday 18Apr06 so ignore the review date above. (I wish the iseekgolf team would add a field to these reviews that allowed you to put in the date when you played rather than when you wrote the review...)

BHGC cost me $65 to play as a green fee paying visitor and they seemed quite happy to take the tee booking over the phone. On arrival though the whole atmosphere from clubhouse, pro shop and staff seemed overly pretentious. The lady members were playing at the time and those I spoke to all seemed friendly enough though.

The first six holes of this course are spectacular linksland, set in the sand dunes and coastal scrub behind Barwon Heads township. The remaining holes worked partly through the hind dunes and more vegetation, but were neither as exposed to the wind nor open to one another. Fairways were dry and patchy due to water restrictions but gave excellent run to drives. Greens were very fast and the roll was exacerbated by the gusting wind. Plenty of fairway undulations and bunkers as you'd expect for the location.

The course would not be overly difficult in calm conditions but when the wind was blowing (and apparently it does very regularly) it was quite a challenge.

A nice enough course, but if I had only one day in the area to play golf I reckon I'd go elsewhere as it would be cheaper and probably more welcoming.

One of the classic links courses of Victoria.

It doesn't play long, but is often windy, which make it difficult. It is also very natural looking with a couple of the short par 3's being little gems.

Make sure you take enough club on your approach to the 18th.
