Macquarie links is a great course to challenge the single figures player without sacrificing playability for the high handicapper. A course with an excellent array of holes, each with a new challenge and fun and interesting design. The fairways have plenty of swales and bumps to make them interesting as well as the greens, however they are not crazy swales like the greens at the lakes which make for a difficult day out.
The things i like most about this course are the width of the fairways (quite wide), the course conditioning (excellent, apart from some of the bunkering which needs some more sand, you can see the clay base at the tops of them), the rough which is not overly penal i.e. unless you really hook or slice your ball to the extreme you will probably find your ball. The strongest point of the course is the variety of the layout which makes great use of the natural landscape and enhances it with artificial hillocks etc, plus the signature par 3’s, 11th, 15th and par 4’s 14th and 18th.
Great course, highly recommended.
The course reminds me of playing on good courses throughout Asia, China, Japan etc.

Played the course for the first time and was quite impressed by the layout and condition of the course. To suggest it is in ’The Links" style is a bit of an overstatement to me, but in saying that, it does gobble up the wayward drive off the tee and around the greens. I am not an overly big hitter, but if you are straight, the majoritiy of greens can be reached or just short in reg. The par 5’s are genuine at the distance (we played off the blacks) and a par is good value. The 11th is a ball tearer of a par 3 with almost a full water carry as is the 16th, both intimidating to say the least. The greens were in very good condition, quick and true. I found the track a tad difficult for me, but still enjoyed it immensely and would venture out again, if for no other reason than it was enjoyable and I would enjoy trying to best my original score. (98) If you enjoy a challenge, this is it.

PROS

  • If you can hit it long enought to find some of the downhill runs the par 4's are achievable.
  • Extemely well maintained greens which are fast and true.
  • A risk/reward type layout with wayward shots often punished by bunkers, water or deep rough/hazards

Measures 6208m Par 72 with four par 3s ranging from 148-205m, ten par 4s ranging from 278-405m and four par 5s ranging from 465-511m.

ML has been open from 2001-02 which is nearly 10 years now with an established aura of excellence. I know the rankings of Australia’s courses are an imperfect way of measuring architectural merit, as Australian Golf Digest (March 2010) ranks ML #84 in Australia and #11 in Greater Sydney, but they are a reasonable guide to use.
Just to clear up the confusion, ML is on shale-based land and is 45km from the coast, so can not, by definition, call itself a traditional links course, but could call itself a links-style course. Not sure what other reviewers are on about but the course is quite long and challenging from the back plates and even longer from the championship tees. I agree with others that the back nine is the most challenging and has most of the memorable holes.

ML has smooth undulating couch fairways and teebeds with large consistent-speed bent grass greens with over 80 bunkers.

All par 3s are lengthy and challenging with sand, swales and water to avoid which I rate as ML’s best attributes. Some of the easier rated holes here are its par 4s, where you can score well on, as I feel all par 3s here and some par 5s are not easy birdie opportunities.

Highlights include: the 405m straight 2nd (index 2) with fairway bunkers to avoid off the tee and water to avoid short + right of the green; the 184m slight downhill 5th (index 4) with water far right of the sand with swales on the left; the 393m straight 9th (index 6) with a teeshot over the crest with water cutting 15m short of the green and left with a bunker right; the signature 168m 11th (index 7) with a teeshot over a stormwater channel ravine to a green below the teebed guarded by 3 bunkers; the 355m 14th (index 5) with a crescent-shaped fairway hugging water on left with 4 fairway bunkers and another bunker over the back of the green which slopes left to the water; the 205m 15th (index 1) with that same large lake on the previous hole collecting anything short or left of the green which is also guarded by a bunker 25m short; the 511m 17th (index 11) with 3 tall trees on the right edge of the fairway off the tee with a creek across the fairway 100m short of the green guarded by 3 bunkers and the 392m straight 18th (index 3) with a similar teeshot like the 9th over the crest but with 3 bunkers and water on the right of the green.

Remembering that 1-star is "basic golf" and 5-stars represents "golf at its absolute best", I’d rate ML up towards the top end of the scale. With very friendly staff and members I played here a number of times most recently in their Sunday competition. The course has opened up more play for non-members with an open competition on Wednesdays with $75 fees or $65 fees for member’s guests with cart included. Social play for non-members is temporary available now from $85 on weekdays and $108 on weekends with cart included but this privilege may cease over time.

Course closes on Mondays and is open for members and their guests and the corporate day. The course has dropped their joining fee at the moment to entice other members to join.

Outstanding Golf Course… To be met as a visitor by the pro shop staff like i was a full fledged member of their club was brilliant. Top notch service started our day off on the right step and ensured our day was going to be a joy regardless of how we played.
The Course itself is outstanding and great fun to play. I am becoming a fan of links courses as they are very tricky with an emphasis on shot placement over distance and this course is definatly risk and reward style.

I don’t know who Rockinrenz is but he must be spoilt for courses. I have played Macquarie Links a number of times and in all seasons and it has been in excellent condition every time. It is a true championship course, with perfect fairways but plenty of trouble for wayward drives. The service is impeccable and the facilities are first class.
I guess everyone has a right to their own opinion but some people seem harder to please than others.

I was a little underwhelmed by this course.

The front nine wasn’t particularly interesting and looks just like a thousand other resort style courses built in the last 20 years. The back nine was much more interesting with some excellent holes.

Pretty good condition, greens not lightning. Don’t think i’ll rush back.

A beautifully presented course. greens are true (although soft) – pick the line, hit and it will drop. Fairways generous and good condition. Water in play on a number of holes but really, it has to be a bad shot to go in the drink. Bunkers are consistent in condition. Generally a wide open course with not too much to trouble a straight player. The 11th is a cracker – par 3 over a ravine to a well shaped green. Visitor special price of $83 included single or share cart and free warm-up balls.

I have played this course few times now and my experience keeps getting better. Course is in excellent condition right now and the greens are slick and pure. I am most impressed by the layout as its forgiving off the tee for most of us but the greens are well protected and are very tricky. This combination makes this course challenging for all golfers. Some of the holes on back 9 requires course management and best to leave your driver in the bag such as 12th, 13th and 14th. Par 3 11th has just been voted one of Sydney’s top 18 holes and surely deserves it. My only complaint – some of the bunkers were not well kept and had too much sand in them.

An absolutely excellently presented and manicured golf course. A lot of other courses should take a leaf out of Macquarie Links’ book when it comes to course upkeep. Even after the massive amounts of rain/flooding, etc that South West Sydney, the course has held up superbly. Aside from the aesthetics, the course is well laid out and offers a challenge to all standards of golfers as there are varying tee beds on all holes. The 11th is truly a magnificent golf hole – perhaps the best Par 3 in Sydney?? All in all, this course is a pleasure to play on and I would urge anyone invited to accept the invite with open arms.

Play this course every now and then through a friend who works their and it is certainly a course kept in very good shape. Tees boxes, fairways, bunkers and greens are immaculate which makes for a very good golfing experience.

Front 9 is certainly easier than the back, however I still find the course challenging. The greens are smaller than average on most halls so your approaches have to be spot on.

It is an expensive course, but the fees have been dropped of late to allow more golfers to play on open days. I recommend you give it a shot.

PROS

  • Course is in prestine condition
  • Very good facilites; practice area, clubhouse
  • Easily accessable from the M5

Cons

  • Stereotype of the area
  • Some experienced golfers may be disapointed with the challenge
  • Expensive

Played there last week and found the course to be not quite what I expected.

The pro shop staff were friendly and attentive.

The front is quite weak for a course with all its raps, with the par 3 8th being the pick.

The back nine is much better with the Par 3 11th being one of the toughest i have played, hit a bad shot there and you will pay the consequence. The other hole I liked was the Par 5 17th, makes you think if you should go for it with your 2nd or lay up short of tthe ditch.

Overall a nice golf course but not worth the $79 we payed to play in the comp. For that price there are much better courses in Sydney you can play…

played here 3 weeks ago + enjoyrd the day very proffesional setup gated entry, bag drop off, freindly staff, use of range balls prior to hit off on a well presented practise area put you in a great frame of mind to start your game. The front nine reminds me off a typical resort style course winding along the large homes on the estate, not overly long and not very challenging however it is a different story on the back nine with the final 5 holes as tough a finish as you will get, the presentation of the course and the superb clubhouse tells you it is an elite establishment if you get the chance to play here take it. Oh also when you repair a divot the sand is green, it blew me away something as simple as that makes the course visually great

Sometimes you are lucky enough to play on a course where the whole experience lends itself to you playing good golf.

I was lucky enough to play here last week and straight from the start with balls piled up in a pyramid next to the mats at the practice range I coudl sense it was going to be a great day.

While the fairways looked brown and dry they played great and I'ms ure part of the couring is to give the course more of a links feel. Greens were of a very quick nature but played true.

There are some really nice golf holes out on the course too with variety being the key. Of course the par 3 11th is a standout and I imagine can be very daunting when the breeze is up. Another standout hole is the par 4 14th where it looks as if you can cut off more of the lake than you really can.

Really enjoyed the day here and nothing beats sitting on the verandah of the clubhouse after a round sipping a cold ale looking across the sun drenched course that you have just played on.

If you get a chance to play here jump at the chance and then hope to get invited back again!

Played here for the first time a few weeks ago. Was very impressed with the quality of the fairways and greens. The course reminds me somewhat of Terry Hills.

The par3, hole 11 sticks in my mind still. From the white tee, it is about 165m which is almost all carry across an angry looking ravine. The day we played, the wind was blustry and with a rescue club was able to make it across! Dramatic hole indeed.

Would love to play there again as it was most enjoyable.

I catch the train past this course almost every day and it has really turned green in the last couple of weeks with the rain on the long weekend. Walked the course for the NSW Open and the 2 words that cae to mind were long and hilly, not a preferred combination. Now that the dams are full this course should come along in leaps and bounds. Hope to play it in January.

Played here in a corporate event when the course was only 12 months old but could really see the potential in this course, off the back tees it is a great challenge and it is a great style of course, from the time we drove through the gates to the time we drove out it was a pleasurable day all round, if you like links golf this is a must.

For a young course I thought it was well presented and had some good challenging holes. I felt the highlight was the back nine, except for the crow on fourteen taking my ball from the fairway whilst I yelled futilely from the tee!

The links style works okay, although it may have been better served by trying to be more of a parkland-style course. The surrounding semi-urban environment seems at odds with the course design.

Nonetheless the course is challenging enough to engage the good golfer and I would happily return if invited.

I live at Macqaurie Links Estate but have never played the course. I get to sit here in the house and watch Golfer after Golfer play on this beautiful course. I wold join here if I had the money. It is rather expensive but opens up opportunities to play at a large number of world class courses right across the globe. (including Pinehurst!)

The course is always in wonderful condition and the ground staff are exceptional. You never see them even come close to interfering or holding up someones game while they water or mow a green or fairway.

The whole club atmosphere is very professional and elite as I have been in the club a few times.

I have to drool, but maybe one day will save up enough to join here.

Excellent new course with plenty of bunkering, wide fairways & few trees. These features allow a nice risk & reward design. Many of the holes have quite a few options & this in itself makes the course quite challenging.

9 & 18 are both great holes featuring water. The 11th is a stand out par 3.

I don't understand the previous 2 reviews as they both seem to be by the same guy (shinermick).

This is an excellent course to play if you can get a game there.

I don't like rating courses as I believe each course has it's own personality and therefore will appeal to different people in different way's but I had to comment after A.J's review.(what a @!#$* ! )

If you want to play a top notch golf course in South Western Sydney then Mac' Links is a must play destination.

22. andrew14966 | Rated | 27 Dec 2002 | Add A Review

Another course where the word Links is used to cover the fact that the designers could not be bothered to try something different. Throw in a few mounds & some pot bunkers & call it a traditional links course. A Links course at Ingleburn ? I don't think so.

Anyway, the course has some good holes. The 11th is a good par 3 & water comes into play at the 18th. The fairways are quite firm, giving up an extra 20m of run, but the greens are too soft. This makes good scoring easy.

Possibly will be reasonable course in 5-6 years.
