Mcleod Golf Club "One year after the Floods"

Mcleod has had a tough year, 15 of the 18 holes went under for at least 3 days in January 2011.

This year the the club has spent over $400k to bring the fairways greens and bunkers back to standard.

2012 will be a great year for this course as the fairways now have 90% grass coverage, 10 of the worst bunkers have now been completely renovated and the greens are running true.

Come down and give this course a go you’ll be glad you did.!!!

A shocking golf experience. Bunkers are rancid. Greens are slow. Fairways are shitty at best.

Has the occassional decent hole, but the reality is that the course has very little going for it.

Clubhouse is a mundane sweatbox.

PROS

  • The serenity provided by decrepid building next to the 2nd tee which is overrun by birds (not to mention the stench that comes with it).
  • It keeps a certain type of golfer away from the better courses.

Cons

  • The 4 hours spent wishing that you didn't turn up.

Having read the reviews my wife and I decided to play and give our own review of this course. There had been a lot of rain over the past week and the bunkers had water lying in them but that couldn’t be helped, the rest of the course was in very good condition with staff working on maintainance but not interfering with play. The worst thing about this course is that there are no course plans or stroke savers available and no descriptions of the hole on the tee. There are a number of blind tee shots especially hole 15 and it made the round more difficult not knowing where you were going. Not too difficult to walk either. Overall we enjoyed the course and will definitely go back.

I just joined the gateway membership in McLeod and found out that it is a very challenging course. Lots of waters, bunkers, uphill and downhill.

It’s a course that will improve your game. Looking forward to play in the coming year~

I played this course again yesterday and even after all the rain the course was still in great condition.

The greens must have been renovated recently so they were a bit slower than last time but they rolled true and very smooth.

I would suggest to people to come and have a look and give mcLeod a try.

Great value great day..

Mcleod Mcleod Mcleod what have you done from the moment we walked in to the pro shop and was told that there was no motorised buggies available (That were pre booked 2 weeks in advance)to the woman that served us that had absolutely no idea of golf hitting us off on the 10th tee only to be stuck behind a group of guys playing in groups of 6 when we came around to the 1st tee.Five hours later we head for a drink into the clubhouse which should be called the HOT HOUSE (no air-con )cant believe in this day and age that a metropolitan golf club wouldn’t be air-conditioned in Queensland.

Overall the course is a great layout club really needs to look at the staff and maybe employe someone that knows about golf to avoid upsetting paying customers.

PROS

  • Great Layout

Cons

  • Staff not very helpful no idea of GOLF

What was once a lovely course is suffering from a lack of maintenance.
Fairways with large areas of dead grass and weeds, bumpy greens that are inconsistent in speed.
Bunkers are the worst I have ever experienced.
Lots of effort needs to be put into this course to bring it back to an enjoyable level.

Played this course last Monday and was apprehensive after reading previous reviews. However, my experience was a great day on a course that I found to be more than adequate and the greens were all in good condition with very tight pin placements. Some previous knowledge of the layout would have been an advantage as a couple of blind shots are required on undulating fairways with some water hazards appearing as if from nowhere. We had no problem with waiting as we were following some half dozen holes behind a Club Open round which had us teeing off around midday. I would not hesitate to have another shot at this course now that I have an idea of the layout.

Played McLeod Recently and have always loved this course and found the layout to be a challenge. I doubt I’ll ever go back though as the pace of play on this course is the slowest I have endured. We played 13 holes before our group gave up in disgust as the 13 holes had taken us 4 and a half hours. There are no marshalls, it is overbooked, and on the day I was there at least another 2 groups gave up due to frustration.

The layout is good, but golf isn’t enjoyable when it takes this amount of time to play.

During a recent visit to Bribane from Melbourne, I decided to play this course as it was close to where is was staying and to be honest I came away with mixed feelings. Firstly lets start with the greens, Yes they were REALLY long and REALLY slow which was disappointing, however the size and undulation of the greens was great, one day they may learn to mow the greens. Now as for the course layout, Mcleod has some interesting holes and yes the fairways may not be the greatest, however majority of the issues I faced were divots not being filled in and this is a common problem. It’s not hard to carry a bucket of sand. if you are a medium to long hitter off the tee, this course requires you to think a bit as most of the holes trouble hits around 240+ metres. I especially liked the 2nd hole as looking down from the elevated tee made for an interesting shot, with water and sand on the left side.

Although greens (and some tees) were a let down, I did enjoy the layout of Mcleod. Would give it another go if the greens were cut.

After teeing off on the 10th after waiting for 30 minutes, we found the course with a lot of residual water from last weeks rains. Obviously this course does not have any natural drainage. Some interesting layout but will not be playing again.

PROS

  • Blind shots

Cons

  • Overbooked
  • Poor drainage

Played here for the first time today and i don’t think I’ll have another round. We had to wait 45minutes to tee off because of such a long line up off the 1st tee. Then we found about 50% of the fairways were dead and brown, in contrast to their greens which were ridiculously long to the point that we didn’t know where the green started and the fairway ended. Overall the layout was fine however some of the markers off the tee’s were out by at least twenty meters.

Played McLeod recently and found the staff to be incredibly friendly and the course in great condition. McLeod is not an easy course as it offers a lot of variety and is a tight driving course. The ninth is a great Par 5 with water to the right of the green, this is a blind shot if going for the green in 2 and if you haven’t played before it certainly is a surprise.

There is a bit of water on the course and if you play early there is not much traffic. I love playing McLeod and will continue to play there for the variety and the challenge.

PROS

  • Great Variety
  • Good Conditioning
  • Easy to get Tee Time

Played here a few weeks ago and left absolutely disgusted. Had been keen to try the course as we had a friend whose house backed onto the course and with some friends visiting we thought it would be great opportunity.

From 1st hole the problems started – dump trucks and workmen on the fairways and greens. If it was 1 or 2 holes it would not have been an issue – however I had to call the pro-shop to ask where a flag was on the 8th as the green was covered with workmen. That was the 3rd temporary green on the front 9. There was absolutely no mention of works going on – either when I booked the round or when we arrived in the pro-shop to pay.

After 18 we thought we had to say something – when we did the gentleman behind the desk stated “how do think the members feel” and “if we warned people, no one would want to play”. I know for a fact we would have played elsewhere. Only when we asked for the general mangers name and details to lodge a formal complaint did he become at all apologetic.

If they had of given us a heads up and warned us as to the work going on we would have been prepared. A discounted green fee would have been a great idea as well. I don’t feel it is the player’s responsibility to ask “are there any workmen on greens“ or “are there any temporary greens”.

We left with a very bad impression of Mcleod, that could have easily been avoided. A shame that visiting friends had to experience this and leave thinking this is what Brisbane golf courses are like

Course is not difficult with wide fairways. Played there twice and first impression was really good. Both times we were all by ourselves, no traffic in front or behind us.

Fairway - Wide and "sprayable", rarely OOB. Nice condition.

Green - Very good condition, big greens too.

Bunkers - good soft sand

Overall -4 stars and will play again.

Can't exactly remember which holes, but there's a nice one where water comes into play.

I rate this course better than St Lucia

A lot of people dislike this place because it's run by women but I have no problem with that and doesn't affect my game :) Highly recommended if you are thinking to play a decent and low fee course.

Although the western suburbs of Brisbane have many fine courses, this is not one of them- poor couse layout, poor conditioning, unhelpful staff and a lack of competitions on Sundays for the handicap golfer-plus they are not allowed to mow the greens on weekends due to a residential noise dispute, all adding to a miserable days golf.

McLeod is a great course to play as it offers great variety. It is a course with hills, water and trees. McLeod is always in good shape, although the fairways have many rough spots. I have never had a problem getting a tee time. The course does reward long hitters with all but one par 5 reachable in two shots. Definately a course worth playing and a great friendly atmosphere.

Reading the lukewarm or negative reviews here and hearing a few of the same from others over the years I wasn't expecting too much when I recently played at McLeod.

Perhaps because of these low expectations I thought it wasn't really that bad overall. It offered up a decent mix of hole style - shorter, longer, ones where you really had to think about placement, ones where you could have a bit of a belt and holes that were flat and up and down hill - I think type of variety is a real plus in a golf course.

The condition of the fairways and greens were decent overall - greens are a little bit on the slow side but the grass was consistant. The back nine isn't irrigated apparantly and while the grass is a bit of a mix on the fairways overall I didn't find it especially lacking by recent dorught-stricken Brissie standards. The bunkers were generally well-sanded and the fringe areas of most holes pretty well cared for I thought. A lot of the holes had quite a nice aspect with wetlands style water in a few places and plenty of trees and birdlife.

I'd definately rate this course above courses like St.Lucia and Vic Park and in terms of course condition and attractiveness probably above Oxley. It's definately no where near as bad as I was lead to believe. For the price etc I think it's worth a hit.

I have only played this course once and to be fair ther were some appealing holes on this course. However the condition of the course left alot to be desired with the greens almost impossible to read from any position.

The first hole has one of the worst tee off positions,I have ever seen and played.

Lots of money is required to turn this course around into a good course that it should be.

I don"t think I will be going back to this track.

Mcleod is the only course in the southern hemisphere that is owned and run by women.

The course's holes and the layouth is fantastic and be a real challenge. It is a short course but you will have to shoot straight all day.

The disappointing thing about the course was that 1. it was virtually brown due to lack of watering ( although it is summer) but most importantly 2. we were set to tee of at 7:30 and by the time we finished it was 2: 15 because it was grossly overbooked by the staff.

All up its a fairly good course that is certain to improve as winter comes around.

I am a local of McLeod Golf Club and have played the course about 20 times.

Over the past 2 years the introduction of fairway watering and new signage tees have not only added visual beauty but also improved the course out of sight.

With generally good all round features, plenty of water and tricky greens (which would rival any greens in brissie), it provides a test of golf for all levels of player. Some good, long par 3's, short, medium and long par 4's and 3 reachable par 5's and 1 which measures over 530m.

Good value for money and reasonable green fees.

This course was named after Gertrude McLeod and is a womans course run by women. The day I played there most recently I thought they must have named it after Gertrude the cow as the greens resembled a farm!

It is a good course but the contempt for outsiders and male golfers in general will do nothing to endear this course to the greater public. Why would they encourage their mens team to qualify for Division One Pennants and then sand the greens the week they host their own pennant match...As I said, it's run by women!

Best holes are 9, 15, 17 & 18. This is a good course to get a score going but is not easy to close out the round.

As my local course, I have played McLeod numerous times, never again after my round (half round) two weeks ago.

After booking an 8:30am tee a week in advance, we arrived on the Sunday on time, asked to tee off where the course was so busy we waited 15 mins at the first tee, only to have another group of "players" pushing in. Waiting for up to 15 minutes at each tee on the first 9 we learned that we had been dropped in the middle of a social comp by the staff.

After completion of the first nine and teeing off on the 10th, the balding Pro came and pulled us off the course (without replacing the balls already hit), was very insincere and not at all apologetic about the 3+ hour first nine & the complete lack of disorganisation. We even had to argue to get a cash refund for the first 9 holes.

I know three people that would rather travel a long long way than play there again.

I found the course ok. The greens are nice, but the fairways are pretty ordinary, they are quite dry. The bunkers are some of the worst I have seen, very hard and almost like playing out of dirt instead of sand. I also found the course staff to be very rude and obnoxious. They are also very disorgansied, always having to wait long times before being able to tee off etc.

All in all the course is ok, but the poor customer service and long waiting times make for a disapointing experience.

Played this a couple of months ago and was looking forward to getting back there again. It's quite hilly, and a good walk around but not overly long. The social tees on the par 5's are very generous. Great to play a course where 3 of the 4 par 5's are LESS than 500 metres, and only 2 of the 5 par 3's are over 175 metres. Beautiful true greens, well maintained bunkers and the fairways are in excellent condition. $20 Green fees ($13-50 for pensioners) makes it a very affordable day out. Great clubhouse with huge bacony overlooking the 9th and 18th greens. Great way to finish off an enjoyable day.

Looking forward to playing there again.

I am a member of McLeod and have found this a good course but as golfisfun said, water is often at the bottom of hills. This is only the case on the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 9th, if you slice or push your approach on 14, a hook on 15 and a pull on the 17th tee. The fairways are in the process of having an irrigation system fitted while the chipping green is being rebuilt. The longest hole on the course (the 9th) is 530metres with water coming into play on your 2nd and 3rd shots. The 15th is a hole that catches the hoping golfers out. If you go to cut the corner, watch out there is a hell of a lot of water in front of the green and a pot bunker about 3 metres deep. Brett.

I only just played Macleod Country Golf Club for the first time last week and found it to be a good course value for money wise.

This course has a great amount of potential to become an excellent course in the not to distant future. With the introduction of a ground retriculation system (currently under construction) the ordinary fairways have a great chance for development.

The layout of the course, through undulating hills, is simple yet fun. Some sections give a feeling of secludedness with the majority in open wide fairway to fairway design.

A fair amount of water (often placed at the bottoms of large hills) makes the need for some tricky and well thought out shots.

Well worth a look in a few months.
