Metropolitan Golf Club

Melbourne, VIC | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.5) | Add A Review

Metropolitan is a private club that enjoys a reputation as one of the best-conditioned and most beautiful courses in the country. Pure couch grass fairways with large, fast bent-grass greens that are hand-mown to the edges of the greenside bunkers add greatly to the challenge of the course.

In total there are 106 bunkers and almost every hole is flanked by huge stands of Australian native trees which provide sanctuary to many species of native birds.

This is a beautiful sandbelt course. I think the bunkering is stunning and adore that the greens are mown right to the bunkers edge. You would struggle to ever play this course outside of immaculate condition. A gorgeous old golf course that easily stacks up in today’s world.

Played Metro in Feb 2011 and was left quite disappointed. After playing Huntingdale a week prior to Metro, I was expecting more of the brilliant same but unfortunately it didn’t live up to its neighbour in both condition and layout. I would have to say the course became quite monotomous with the front nine seeming being an endless par 5 slog, then of course nothing but par 4’s on the back. With a lot of work still being carried out (the same works form 2 years ago!) the course just didn’t live up to it’s billing. I won’t be rushing back.

Played 18 around Metro 2 weeks ago as a guest of a member. What a pleasure – excellent condition – for me the highlight was the bunkering and fantastically kept and true greens. A tough challenge for most golfers, but if you are given an opportunity to play it make sure you do – it’s a cracker!

The other reviewer is spot on. This course is top quality. I reckon he/she didn’t feel they played well because it’s brilliantly set up such that you have to plae tee hots and approaches. I played it in July 08 as a guest of a member before I moved out here last month. So I played a holiday game when I needed to have my competition head on to score.
Club gave me clubs to use. They were proper ones. Pro said take your pick of the demo drivers!!

Everybody should try this sort of thing once!

What a course! The fairways are so thick that I don’t leave a divot even with my short iron! But after I finish the round, I felt frustrated that I did not play that well, given the good conditions. Determined to play there again. Will be playing Kingston Heath soon and will compare these two. Can some one propose me to join this club. PLEASE!
