Mona Vale Golf Club

Sydney, NSW | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

Set right on and overlooking Mona Vale beach, this must be one of the prettier public courses available to social golfers. The club house is set high on a hill some 300 metres from the sand. You get an incredible view from the clubhouse that in itself is spectacular.

Mona Vale has become one of the most popular Sydney metropolitan courses and it’s easy to see why. Fairways and greens are maintained by the club to a standard required for championship courses in Sydney’s Metropolitan area. It is well bunkered and with tree-lined fairways and water hazards it will test every standard of golfer.

Measures 6068m Par 72 with five par 3s ranging from 129-180m, eight par 4s ranging from 323-409m and five par 5s ranging from 460-510m.

Course has lush (and mostly wide) kikuyu grass fairways with medium-to tall sized tree-lined fairways. The medium-sized poa/bent grass greens are smooth but not overly quick with couch grass surrounding most greens. The course has 7 water hazards and ponds and apart from the 15th and 18th you have to be pretty wayward to find them in the tree-lined rough. There are 37 bunkers with the 15th and 18th being the only entirely bunkerless holes on the course.

The front nine layout is fairly mundane with up-and-back style holes identical to those holes played previously like the 1st/2nd and the 5th/6th and 7th/8th – which feature a longer hole followed by a similar length par 3 – but the front nine has slightly more and better bunkering than the back nine.

Highlights include: the 510m 5th (index 7) which doglegs 60 degrees left from 360m off the tee to a green with 2 leftside bunkers; the 180m uphill 6th (index 4) to a 30m long front-sloping green with 2 bunkers left and 2 bunkers short right; the 370m slight bend left 9th (index 2) with the tee above the fairway with OOB along the entire leftside with tall paperbark trees on the right to a green with 2 bunkers; and the short 330m slight uphill dogleg right 10th (index 8) with the only fairway bunkers on the course off the tee to avoid to a green with a bunker short left.

The course’s closing 4 holes are the most challenging part of the course with fewer trees and bunkers, doglegs with most flags not visible from the teebed, a large pond, OOB and an interesting elevated tee at the short par 3 which require special mention: the 409m slight bend left 15th (index 1) with the large pond on the right off the tee with the elevated bunkerless green above the fairway below the clubhouse; the signature 129m 16th (index 17) with an elevated tee with the ocean horizon as a backdrop behind the green guarded by 3 bunkers; the 379m straight 17th (index 5) with OOB thickly vegetated Mona Vale Beach shrubs along the entire leftside rough to a green guarded by a bunker 10m short right; and the 386m slight bend left 18th (index 3) which plays similar to the 15th with the same large pond on the left off the tee with the elevated bunkerless 20m wide x 15m long green which plays uphill from 70m out on the fairway with the clubhouse overlooking the green to the left.

There are a few holes near the clubhouse with the teebed above the fairway (on the 1st, 7th, 11th & 16th tees) but otherwise the course is entirely flat. Holes 1-10 are on the Pittwater Road (western side) of the clubhouse whilst holes 11-18 are towards the hospital and beach.

Apart from the par 3s near the clubhouse the par 3s were generally weak, but there some good short and longer length par 4s holes and the par 5s were of similar length and challenge for all golfers.

I agree with others and I feel the course should finish with the 15th as it is challenging into a northerly wind, and unlike the 18th, its green is in full view below the clubhouse…

Played here again off the back member plates in 4.5 hours late on a Thursday afternoon with $39 green fees or $25 twilight fees after 3.30pm (AEDT).

I was waiting on every hole, but you have to expect this during the busy summer December-January holiday months, especially with 5 out of 10 northern beaches golf clubs being private-access only, MVGC is amongst the most popular public-access course on the northern beaches.

Great clubhouse views which is very popular with functions, and remembering on this website that 1 star indicates “basic golf facilities” and 5 stars denotes “golf at its absolute best”, MVGC is well conditioned and is an above-average public-access golf course.

Played on the Boxing day. The course is in a great condition and well maintained. The green breaks little more than you think it would but once you get used to it, it shouldn’t be a problem. Some holes forced me to tee off with my spoon and some holes weren’t long enough to use the driver so I ended up using the driver twice for the whole day. It was the Boxing day so the course was pretty full but the wating time was reasonable. I would definitely return.

Course is excellent in condition as might have great Mona Vale Competition.

Nothing to complaint!

I used to play at Mona Vale quite often when I was young. I had my first game recently and the course is still fantastic. With the tress now fully grown the couirse is more difficult – don’t bother trying to head down other fairways unless you can pitch 150 feet vertical.
Great course and great location.

Played the course on a windy Tuesday, 5/7/11. The course was in great condition with lush fairways and solid, quick greens. Some work is currently being done on the 12th tee so it was closed with a temporary tee turning this par 4 into a par 3. As others have said the views from around the club house are impressive.
The day however was spoiled for me by slow play, playing by myself I realise that I play quicker than groups but until I hit the back of the ladies comp on the 11th groups were happy to let me play though. I had to wait on every shot I played (it averaged 8min wait on each hole) and in the end I didn’t play 17 or 18.

Play this course on friday once i got over poor people skills of pro shop staff whom seem to not care about non members.
Found course to have a good mix of holes and greens are fast and true and for price of 18 and a cart course is good value overall had a pleasant day of golf with a couple of mates.

Played here over the holiday season on a 7:30am tee off. Course is just fantastic condition. Most holes are quite different with the T’s from the club house being the most picturesque. Quite a thoughtfully set out course thinking back at some of the holes.
I didn’t get a chance to use the practice putting greens but there seems to be two nice ones there.
Can’t beat the club house views once you finish a round and relax on a nice day.
Thank god courses that are lucky enough to be in a sea side setting are open to the public.

Played at Mona Vale twice and faired very differently on the two occasions. What was consistent however over the two outings was the quality of the course. Lovely tree-lined fairways and lightning quick greens. Course has plenty of par 5’s and long par 4’s. Would recommend it to anyone. Just make sure you are straight off the tea otherwise its off to the woods for a big surprise as the song goes.

never fails to impress, that view from the Club house is fantastic. Played yesterday, 25th August 2010. Green just been sanded and aerated and 1st hole T box was under repair. Everything else was good.

The course was in great shape, it had a lovely feel about it. I was a little puzzled with the 15th- which had all the hall marks of a grand 18th. This course is better suited for those who like long wide fairways. I’ve just re read my post and while it seems negative, I would recommend that you play the course.

PROS

  • A nice views every now and then
  • A great course if you like to practice your drives
  • The course wasn't busy so the play flowed well
  • The course was generally is great shape with all the rain and good management, though a couple of bald patches on the 11th was a little dissappionting

Cons

  • I really didn't have to think about ball placement on a lot of the holes, it was a little boring

What a fantastic course!

Was in the area over the Christmas period & played most of the northern beaches courses with Mona Vale by far the standout. From a pre-game beverage in the magnificent clubhouse (mind blowing view!) to the great warm up facilities, you just know that playing here is something special. Best of all, it’s at a great price compared to many other over rated courses in the area.

Teed off right on time to commence what was not the best of rounds golfing wise but certainly right up there for enjoyment. The beautifully striped fairways are immaculate with not one bad lie to be found (so my partners reckon – I was too busy negotiating the treacherous thick stuff!). Don’t be fooled by what seem relatively generous landing areas, this is one tough driving course if you’re not straight. Thank heavens for the inbuilt gps they have in the carts!

Every time we have played here the greens have been outstanding & this occasion was no different. They are very FAST and the subtle breaks can leave you a long way from the intended spot if you don’t have your A Grade flat stick game with you.

The course design is really interesting with some great par 5s, long par 4s & tricky par 3s. There seems to be some sort of bend in each hole & if you are skilled enough to work it both ways, you might be able to fire around this layout. Depending on which way the wind is blowing, the average mid handicapper could easily have a 15 shot variance between rounds!

Can’t say enough about how good the Mona Vale experience is from the consistent course condition to clubhouse facilities. We’ll definitely be back as often as possible.

Played at Mona Vale during a week away in January and loved it! Place has a great atmosphere and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better setting to have a beer afterwards. Course was in great condition even though it was obviously peak season. Pro Shop and club house staff were all very professional and i was very impressed with their brand new golf carts! Also had a great chat with a friendly greenkeeper who was more than happy to give me some helpful directions. My only criticism of this course is that the greens were very slick – but i understand most golfers like that!
Despite my terrible round (including stacks of putts) i had a great day and we will certainly be back for more next year! I can recommend Mona Vale to everyone.

Played here on this course 2 weeks ago for the first time, and what a beautifull view from the top of the car park looking over the golf course to the Pacific ocean, after we had checked in at the Pro shop we were told to have a putt on there putting green where we promptly called to the tee on time for once not like Long Reef where we had to wait for an extra 35 mins as they had over booked the week before..The golf course is in fantastic condition ,havent played on fairways and Greens this good ever!!We were told upon arrival about the Monday and Tuesday special that Mona vale offered 2 players and a cart for $70 which we promptly took up .i can not say enough about the experience we had there as it was such a delight and have already booked back in for the following couple of weeks ,i am definantly making this my club of choice whenever i can sneak away from work
Thanks to the staff for making us feel right at home

The guys controlling the bookings for this course should be fired. The course was totally overbooked and we were continually waiting to play each shot making the round very, very long.

The course itself is a bit dull, with a lot of holes identical to each other, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Won’t be back in a hurry.

Yeah, sorry, this is not even close to a 4.5 star course. Greens fees are overpriced and the pro shop is not particularly skilled at managing their timesheet for non-members, even during the longer summer months! I have played 4 hour long 9 hole rounds in recent years as a result of this, and having been lucky to play the likes of Avondale, Magenta Shores and Long Reef (all of which are considered 4-4.5 star courses on this website), I can safely say this is a 3 star course at the very best in comparison…..

Great Course, I have only played it once but would love to go back. I live in Sydney and it is well worth the drive. The course has some great holes, many tree lined and quite tight. I play off a 2 handicap and would love to play this course of the back tees. It would make it much more challenging. The course is in great condition and the setting is beautiful.

PROS

  • Well manicured course, Reasonable green fee, nice setting, good test of golf.

Really nice course have played here half a dozen times and think that the most recent (june) was the best condition the course has been in. A few par 3’s are just straight up and down but the 4’s and 5’s are crafted well, with greens protected by sand and water. the last few holes bring you seaside and are a great finish to an afternoon. played after 1pm and almost got a full 18 in with a lot of traffic. It’s a bit of a hike from the city but in my opinion better than the other northern beaches courses

I love this course. Played on 23 Novermber 2007.

It has some great holes and requires you to be accurate with your drives. Most holes have tall trees or little hidden water traps either side of the fairways and even if you do find you ball, it will more often than not require you to take the safe option and play out to the fairway to have any chance of recovering.

Some parts of the course was still a little soft under foot. They have recently redone drainage and the course will take a few months to fully recover but I think it will be of great benefit in the long run.

Greens were nice and true. A number of tiered greens requires players to think about their approach shot. Always best to leave the ball under the pin as I can’t remember anyone in our group ever sinking any mid-long downhill putts.

Played Mona Vale on Friday 24 February and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The course recently held the NSW Amateur Championships and the condition of the course is immaculate.

My one small issue with the course is the softness of the greens. Apart from that, I don’t think you will find many better public courses in the Sydney area.

Tee Boxes: 4/5

Fairways: 5/5

Greens: 3/5

Bunkers: 4/5

For $42 (18 holes and cart) you can’t get better value anywhere.

Took 3 guys round Mona Vale for the first time yesterday and was really impressed. I'd read the reports on here prior to booking and have to say that I echo the thoughts of many. The course is not overly long but gives the impression it's longer than it is because of the amount of par 5's and the wind that was blowing a gale.

The Par 3's are medium to short. 150 was the longest from the whites.

Par 4's play either short or long depending on the wind. A Drive and small chip one way is a Drive and a big whack with a rescue the other.

Par 5's are trickier with a few with doglegs or nestled nicely in the trees.

The course in nicely bunkered but the general consensus was that the sand was naff and very, very hard.

The Greens were very true and fair and in very good condition and run much faster than first thought.

Green keepers are all over the place and obviously take great pride in their course. Fairways are immaculate.

Will return soon and would recommend to anyone. Pace of play was quite slow but this is Sydney after all and seems to be the norm everywhere!.

Recently played this course on their Tuesday 'black tees' . As far back as the 'super can get 'em... Meaning that, you were behind the plates on every, well, almost every hole.

Things to bring to this members open day.

1) a solid tee shot.

2) an ability to pick the distance to the pin

3) an absolutely rock solid short game.

4) nerves of steel on the super slick greens.
Apart from that, a 'walk in the park'
Good golfing.

A superb course in a beautiful location with the front nine being largely tree-lined and the back nine opening out a little more as you get closer to the coastline. There is some water but you get the feeling that it's there more for aesthetic purposes than to pose serious trouble for the wayward shot. The only real exception being the lake that runs right up close to the left side of the first 175 metres or so of the 18th - dead easy to put a ball or two into there!

Everything was in beautiful condition when I played here recently, the large greens especially were first class. My only slight criticism of Mona Vale is that it is so very very long -5 Par 5's and some extremely long Par 4's - one or two more par 3's would have been nice to break up the run of long holes a little better. But overall this has to be one of the best courses in Sydney - if you haven't played Mona Vale before get out there as soon as you can.

Well maintained and sloping greens, Mona Vale golf club is a quality course with the world's cheapest green fees. $5.50 for students, this course is a very long par 71 with par 5 after par 5 the course is not to be forgotten with good views of the ocean scope. But unless you can fade like Tiger and draw like Daly, you will be better off hitting high irons around the corners. 11 of the 18 holes have either a large or slight dogleg which makes for a great day of good judgement. Will hope to play there again and experience the course more.

Mona Vale is a beautiful course in a lovely location. It's long and has lots of challenges - water and trees mostly, although a stiff onshore breeze can also cause lots of problems, especially on the back 9. The views are not as good as Long Reef (but Long Reef is almost impossible to match in that department).

The course is always very well maintained but the greens are very difficult. That's not really a criticism - they're almost always in great condition. However, most have quite subtle slopes and I, for one, find them almost impossible to read. (I'll have to play there much more, I suppose!)

All in all, Mona Vale is a challenging course in a superb location. Well worth a visit.

Nestled snugly alongside the beach, Mona Vale GC is a fantastically maintained course, in very picturesque surroundings.

Gaze out over the Ocean and watch the surfers catching a wave whilst waiting to play from the high tee positions of the 1st, 7th, 10th and 16th holes.

The huge lake that follows the long 17th and 18th holes is a great centrepiece to the course, and home to a wide variety of wildlife that calmly watch as you play.

There are very good practice facilities, including a well looked after putting green and chipping area.

And for a well earned Schooner of your favourite laughing-juice, the clubhouse situated at the top of the hill overlooking the cliffs and ocean below is the perfect spot.

A 'must-play' for anyone in Sydney.

Played at Mona Vale today and was very pleasantly surprised.

Plenty of long holes (4's and 5's) and well protected fairways with trees, water AND bunkers.

Course is in great condition and has a very good clubhouse. Locals seemed fine too.

Drive straight and long and you'll be fine.
