Moonah Links (Legends)

Mornington/Bellarine, VIC | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.5) | Add A Review

The Legends Course stands as a tribute to past champions who have contributed to the rich history of Australian golf.

In contrast to the Open Course, which was purpose built to challenge the modern champion, the Legends Course will be a more friendly golfing experience for players of all ages and abilities.

The course is a loop of 18 holes that generally follow the valleys through a variety of landscapes ranging from ancient Moonah woodlands to open links land. The fairways are generous and the putting surfaces gentle, but the bunkering style is bold and wild in appearance.

At 6,315 metres, the course should be fun, but it won’t be a pushover.

It is a treat to play this golf course. Variety & beautiful scenery make for a brilliant round of golf here. Course asks questions of the mid-level handicapper without being too punishing at any stage. Certainly a layout where it pays to have some previous experience given doglegs, runoffs & bunkers regularly call for accurate distance control. Typically open & forgiving off the tee, rough is penal, greens are true.

PROS

  • Faster, steady greens
  • Immaculate course conditioning
  • Thursday AM round played in 3.5 hours

Cons

  • First tee a fair distance from the clubhouse
  • Lack of distance markers around course. A major detractor where wind can play such a factor.

Love the course, but thought it was a little over-hyped from what I had heard about it over the years (played it for the first time a couple of days ago).

It’s a really well crafted 18 holes that lets you go on an adventure and it’s one of the few times I have used every single club in my bag during a round.

I dont know if it was because we were playing off the white markers or not, but a few of the holes seemed a little too short to really soak in the challenge of the lay out (i.e. fairway undulations, fairway bunkers and rough). The 6th was a prime example of this, with a slightly pulled tee shot into the rough still allowing me to hit a 4 iron out and onto the green (you dont get away with that at St Andrews or many sandbelt courses!)

All of the greens were immaculate and amazing, with not a pitch or spike mark to worry about the entire day (maybe the hackers struggle to fly a good ball into the green here? haha! j/k), but as another reviewer said, the subtle undulations and crisply cut holes make for more than a couple of lipouts.

I think this could be even more of a thinkers course with a little more work and planning, but it definitely caters for all golfers in that higher handicappers can have a shot at grabbing a good score if they can get their game together (and they dont have to hit 250m drives to do so)

All in all I had an amazing day for my first attempt at the course thanks to sinking a few long putts and getting away with a few less than clean shots, but in my opinion this course doesn’t hold a candle to St Andrews Beach Gunnamatta… I wouldnt have had 76 there with the amount of missed drives/approach irons I had at Moonah Legends.

In closing, this is the kind of course I could take any friend of any ability to for a great day out in world class facilities and memorable surrounds

PROS

  • Great fun
  • Not too hard for higher handicappers
  • Amazing conditioning ALL year round
  • World class facilities
  • Greens impeccable
  • Bunkers consistent and all raked perfectly

Cons

  • Some holes a little too short
  • Pricey (but that's a given)
  • Hackers can take a lifetime on certain holes

Had a hit on the Legends course today. Great experience. Walked 18 in a group of 4 in a tick over 4 hours. Good mixture of short and long par 4’s to keep you honest. Reasonably challenging course but if you are keepng it straight you can score well on this course.

Fairways and bunkers are beautifully maintained and the second cut is consistent. The rough will kill you but deservedly so if you get into it :) Greens were firm undulating and expansive with pin locations in challenging spots today for the most part, which made shots into the green difficult. I scored very well today and left a few out there playing the course blind for the first time without a course guide so I walked away even more content. Was driving well but second time around the driver wont come out as often as placement is the key.
Gave it 4 stars with no complaints – only thing stopping it from getting 5 stars is there was only 1 very memorable hole for minesort par 4 (11th), as opposed to Cape Schanck and StAndrews having several standout holes in the memory bank. Great course and will be back again for sure.

Played the Legends yesterday for the first time after playing the Open Course on half a dozen previous visits. Conditions were cool cloudy with the northerly wind increasing as the round progressed. My first impressions were that the course plays much shorter and tighter than it’s big brother, the Open Course. I left the driver in the bag a bit more frequently than usual, as positioning the ball off the tee was paramount.

From memory I only landed in one bunker for the round which is a bonus,as they are everywhere, but missed the odd green and bounced off a couple and then had to deal with multiple swales etc.

The greens were fairly firm for mid June, but you expect that down on the Peninsula as the courses remain playable and in great nick all year around. The greens are huge with several levels, hollows, swales, and some dead elephants buried underneath.

There are some good risk reward holes on the course, and the odd par 5 is reachable in two with a decent drive, so eagles and birdies are possible if you know where to go.

This is a course that you really need to play a couple of times in order to know where to hit, and where to land, and as I forgot to fork out the $10 for the course guide, that cost me some strokes out on the course.

The best thing about the course …… well it’s a peninsula course, and that says it all. Beautiful to wolk, fairways immaculate, greens hard and even, and scenic in every sense.

The worst thing, a lack of distance markers on sprinkler heads. I know they had them at some stage, as I saw one or two as I made my way around, but the overwhelming majority of them had been rubbed off or removed ….. and for a first time visitor who forgot to pay an extra $10 for the course guide, it left a sour taste seeing perfect iron shots dropping short of the middle of green by one club.

That being said, it is a very good course, with a good blend of holes .. though not many memorable ones in my humble opinion.

I think too, I just needed to be able open the shoulders up a few more times. If that’s you too, then play the big brother Open Course instead, and you won’t be dissapointed.

But if you like your courses,a more manageable size yet retaining all the interest, then you should love the Legends Course …. just remember to get the course guide.

Spent a week on the Mornington Peninsula with Moonah Legends being the highlight course. The course was in magnificent condition in all aspects, with great manicured, sometimes expansive fairways to the undulating generous greens and beautiful vistas off some well placed elevated tees.

The course has a great mix of challenging longer holes to tricky shorter par 4’s where placement off the tee is critical. The course is challenging without being ridiculously penalising to the average golfer. All in all a great experience and one I hope to have again one day.

Had a fantastic day at Moonah Legends. Played 18 holes in 3 hours 45 mins!! This is a wonderful course. Tees, fairways and greens in immaculate condition. I found it similar in some ways to The Cut in WA but better in that the real estate around does not impact visually on the course. Also more forgiving from the tee. The rough at The Cut is a killer
There are some lovely variations in the holes, long and short par 4’s, doglegs, blind tee shots and really like courses with changes in elevation.
Do yourself a favour when in Victoria and play this course.

PROS

  • Some great short par 4's
  • Immaculate conditions especially greens

Fantastic course as expected. Fairways were perfect and greens in great condition. Would definitely go and play there again. Great facilities both golfing and social. The only down side was that our booking though iseek did not go through and we were not on the time sheet. I have used iseek before and was very disappointed that we were not booked in and had to wait for an hour before we could go out and play.

Played here as a beginner… it killed my confidence, but an amazing course

Moonah Legends was terrific. Challenging but fair, you usually have a good risk reward decision on most holes. Whole course was in great condition. Highly recommended.
Only problem was that the iseek booking had not been recieved by Moonah so we were stuck in between groups to get us onto the course which provided some trouble at the first tee.

A wonderful course – designed to be challenging but enjoyable. The condition of the course was A1 – Fairways great and greens fast and very true. The Legends is always the first course booked when we visit the Mornington.

This is the second time I have played here and the experience was just as wonderful as the first. The course has been set up fairly with a short (and relatively easy) par 5 on the 1st hole to ease you into your day. There are usually options on most holes depending on how aggressive you are and how hard you hit it which makes it challenging for all levels. Bunkering is very good especially those horrid fairway bunkers which like gobbling your straight drives up if you aren’t careful enough.

Conditioning as always is first-class with well-manicured fairways and true-rolling greens. Possibly need a bit more sand in some bunkers which resulted in variable bounces with the wedge.

The rest of the facilities are A1 with great practice facilities, modern clubhouse and a spa if you need to wind down afterwards.

The only downside….the excrutiating slow play. I disagree with the previous submitter, just because this is a public course doesn’t automatically mean a 5 hour + round. We were stuck behind a foursome (who were in motorised carts!!!) which fell 3 shots behind the group in front at the turn. They should have been forced to skip a hole by the marshall (where-ever he was) but instead EVERY GROUP behind them for the REST OF THE DAY was playing stop-start golf. I would have walked off after 9 holes if I was playing at a less desireable course.

Played this course for the first time around two months ago and absoloutly loved every minute of it. even though I find it pretty steep to pay 75$ for a round of golf, i can certainly justify every cent playing this course. the fairways are like carpet, with few divots in sight, bunkers full of soft sand and deep and strategically placed, rough is punshing but doesnt kill you, and the greens well words cant describe them.there perfect.

the practice facilities there are world class and all the pro shop staff friendly but professional as you would expect.

Although the first tee is a long walk from the clubhouse, i think its possibly one of the best opening 4 holes on the peninsula. You really get a taste for what is to follow with a true risk reward stratergy on the first, needing around a 220m carry over bunkers to give yourself an eaggle chance.

The second is a very short par 4, but a well gaurded green prevents most for going for it in one. followed by a fantastic par 3 really needing thought about club selection to be precise.

My favourite hole on the course has to be the fourth, the elevated tee shot on the dogleg left to a perfect fairway with great bunkering followed by an exciting approach shot. magnificent.

Other highlights of the course are the 6th, 12th, 13th, 16th and 18th.

Our only other let down on the day was slow play ahead, which is to be epected really as this course is fantastic, in my opinion a really enjoyable course for everyone.

What a golf course! Played today and absolutely loved it, never played a course like it – undulating, extremely undulating, blind shots aplenty, magnificent fairways, tees and greens (even if they are nearly impossible to read) the course is just brilliant. Paid $85 for 18 holes including cart and pot and parma in the clubhouse after the round. clubhouse the best I’ve ever been in, they even have a guy driving a refrigerated cart around the course selling cold beers! Go while the parm deal is on.

Played here last week. Was an absolute pleasure to step on this course. From the fairways to the greens … pure perfection. Loved the 1st hole…sets you up for what is in store…if you do well here.. a great confidence builder… if not.. you will still enjoy the day!.. suggest getting a cart.. worth the extra spend (get the discount voucher from iseekgolf).. that way, you will save some energy.. walking up n down the hills & valleys of the fairways!..

What a great golf course. Not brutelly long, you still need to be accurate to score well. Immaculately manicured tee to green, the rough at times can be waist high. Many suptle breaks in the greens that are near immpossible to see, so be prepared for a few lip-outs. One of the most pituresque courses on the coast.

Great track for all types. We had a group of 3 with h/caps ranging from 32 to 3 and everyone had a fun, challenging day. My opinion, play this after the open course and you will enjoy it just that little bit more.
