Situated in Brisbane’s Western suburbs, Oxley Golf Club has for many years claimed, with some justification, that it has one of the best courses in the metropolitan area. Since the course opened in 1929, it has been remodelled on a few occasions, lengthen the course and build a new clubhouse.

The 6227m championship course represents a typically Australian style of course with its tall gum trees and bunkers throughout the layout. For example the 552m 5, 12th hole is one of the most talked about holes at Oxley – not only by the members but also by its many visitors. It is a long rolling hole which dog-legs left. Although the tee shot is important the second shot is critical. Achieve that and the approach using an 8, 9 or wedge shouldn’t cause too much heartache.

The 400m, 4, 15th is a hole that can make or break a good card or even cost you a tournament. The drive must be positioned on the left to middle of the fairway, leaving the second to an angled, extremely bunkered green a little easier. The danger is out of bounds behind the green for those who misread the weather conditions and become over anxious.

Oxley Golf Club also features a newly renovated clubhouse with facilities including a new 60 seat lounge, large dining room, a junior games room, large Pro Shop and a new spacious entry and foyer.

Oxley is a good course, but I have never been fully satisfied after finishing my round. Many holes require the player to hit the approach to an elevated green, making the green not viewable from the naked eye. The laninding areas are very generous, and the course does not offer many water hazards. It is not a extremly hard course, but one which requires you to think about the shot you are about to hit. Course condition in fairly good standard. Not a favourite in my eyes.

Have Played Oxley a few times and seem to keep going back. Very enjoyable, relaxed and an interesting engaging course at the same time. At the moment it is looking lovely so lets hope the drought doesn’t kick in again . Other players are respectful and considerate ( mostly – and not playing for sheep stations ) staff in pro shop are true gentlemen – credit to them.

Played Oxley recently and it was in great condition. The course is a great mix of holes and is certainly a challenge for a mid-handicapper. There are plenty of risk-reward holes with the par 5’s being reachable in two, but only with two good shorts and a level of risk. There are some short par 4’s that could be reachable for a long hitter, but there are many many traps in the landing areas.

The fairways were in great nick, the greens were fast, but true.

All in all, very good value for money.

PROS

  • Great Nick
  • Many Risk Reward Holes

I played at Oxley for the first time ever on Christmas eve ‘07 and I must admit it was a pleasure to play. Admittedly I’m no pro so I found the course to be quite a challenge at times. Yeah some of the holes seemed a little repetitive, but apart from having to cross the road, it flowed quite well.

Greens and fairways were in top nick. Would have been nice to see a bit more water around, as the only hole which had water was a very daunting challenge to a course virgin. Next time I play I’ll be a bit more familiar and will hopefully be more successful. $23 though… great value for money.

I would hope that the course would spend the money on some hole layouts at the tees and some directional signs. At least the attached map was readable, although a little inconvenient to have to pull it out of the bag all the time.

PROS

  • Excellent course conditions
  • Great value for money
  • Not much congestion mid-week
  • Good distance markers
  • 19th hole

Cons

  • Lack of signage

Played course end of December. Tees and Greens where in good condition, was an ejoyable game of golf, but some of the holes at the end are all the same. Not to tuff so a good one to play for a good score. No water to speak of. Have to add that the directions on course are the worst I have ever seen, I have been to putt putts that give you a better idea of where to go next.

Just played Oxley End of Dec 07 in their Friday Comp, have got to say what a difference the rain has made, This course is looking magic, played the course during the drought and the fairways were suffering, however they have come back a treat, Comp was good off the Blue Markers which made the lowest the CCR could be 72, which is great as there is nothing worse than beating the old handicap and going out 0.1. As a Visitor it cost me $20 which I thought was great value, by looking at the results there are two divisions which is handy as well. Was told by my playing partners who were members of Oxley that there is a back marker event held on the first friday of each month, and a Sunday Comp off the whites so will be back to play in a competition thats for sure.

Haven’t played here for years… but played here just recently. Yuck… and that’s putting it nicely. I am not sure what’s going on at the club or whose running it, but the course has definately gone backwards since my last round. I accept Brisbane is in drought, but that’s not an excuse for holes not being sign-posted and the place looking very old and tired. Not impressed.

Played Oxley for the first time, discount voucher certainly made it more appealing, but the course is obviously under managed. No direction on holes. Most greens were in pretty bad shape(even by my hacker status)with one of them under repair surrounding the hole itself. I must admit that the staff were extremely good and for the price I guess you cant complain too much. A little bit more variation on holes would make it more of a challenge. Not too many hazzards to worry about but crossing the road dodging trucks could be a fatal hazzard.

Decided to play Oxley for the first time today and here's a bit of field report.

Tee - Not all holes have distance/par information. No drawings of tee to green but fairways are pretty obvious.

Fairway - hard with little grass. Some holes you can spray but there are some tight fairways with OOB stake along tree lines / fence.

Fairway Bunkers - long and good location to catch ball.

Green Bunkers - medium to soft sand in good condition.

Green - Superb condition. Better than some of the resort courses I've played. Very consistent throughout all holes.

Interesting holes

#4 - under construction

#12 -540m par 5

Overall - good value course considering I only paid $23 using iseekgolf voucher.

Don't forget to get a map from the proshop if you are playing the first time and watch out for cars when crossing between courses.

4 stars!

decided to have our regular comp amongst mates "the pro-hopeless" at oxley a few weeks back, great turnout we had 9 players and went round in groups of 3. green fees are well worth the money and it was a nice course. i concur with comments that its a bit samey but its great for keeping your game straight, picking the length of your shots to get you around the course.

maybe it was just the day we went but the pin positions were ultra challenging...time to leave the ego at home and play realistically otherwise could cost a few shots to the round!!!

personally i rate the par 3 hole 9 as the most challenging on the course, and i really liked the 7th hole, anything less than a decent tee shot would have you playing downhill to get back up the hill.

would play again here for sure, be sure to tee of early, we came at 630 on a saturday and already really busy...i always prefer a 5am tee off but i think the boys have put an embargo on them in the pro-hopeless tournament laws!!!

Played Oxley Jan 07. Used the iseek golf voucher for $23 and wasn't expecting much. This course really suprised me. Although I agree with some reviewers about the holes becoming all a bit the same, there was enough variation to keep things interesting.

The fairways were in great shape as were the greens. This was the most suprising part for me. There was good undulation in the holes meaning you had to think about club selection.

Drawbacks were the fact you had to cross a busy industrial rd 4 times throughout the round. Clubhouse is also looking dated.

Would rate this above Nudgee Sth and St Lucia. 3.5 stars.

I pretty much agree with joe average.

This course for mine was well.. boring there was nothing exciting or different about the course. The challenge of water was none existant however the bunkers are littered everywhere. The Greens are in very good condition as are the fairways. But something was missing from oxley i dont know what it is but i wont be rushing back to play there thats for sure. shame..

This was the first time I have played at Oxley and I can definitely say that I would play it again.

The course is just magnificent, the fairways are in great condition with a nice cut of rough along side. I know this as I managed to find it regularly.

On the day I played, the greens were just way too fast. Despite this, Oxley is a fantastic course. Just make sure you look both ways before crossing the road...

I've reviewed plenty of courses on this website and this has been my most difficult as there is nothing much right or wrong with this track.

It's an old style course built into the bush and whilst there are plenty of solid holes there is nothing that takes your breath away. The greens are excellent, the fairways sound and the tee blocks are fine.

When the new holes are completed they look like they will be two scary tee shots.

There is an internal out of bounds on the 7th hole which is ridiculous. I'm sure it must be there for public liability reasons but I don't see how this wouldn't also apply to plenty of other holes on this course with parallel fairways. Holes 8 & 18 must have been cloned and the tree in the middle of the fairway on 12 must be a rare species as I can see no other reason for penalising a golfer that hits two shots in a row in the middle of the fairway?

I'd play it again if the price was right...free

I've played here many times and always enjoy the round. It's a great course to play socially with a few friends, especially on weekdays. The holes are varied and usually seem to require the right mix of accuracy and length.

The course generally could use some work though just to get it up to the level that it should be. It reminds me of a nice house in need of some renovation work to bring it up to million dollar standard.

The clubhouse is old and unattractive.

The course could use some work with pathways, garden beds etc.

Irrigation and drainage is poor and an ongoing problem for the club.

When I visited a couple of months ago the greens had all been ruined by some kind of disease. Generally the greens are pretty god though.

The bunkers often don't have enough sand or are rock hard.

They should do something about reconfiguring the seventh hole which now has an OB line running down the left side in the middle of the course??

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a good course to play, but I think they are resting on reputation and not putting the work into keeping the club and course up to scratch.

This course is one of the best courses in brissie, its well maintained, well priced, the layout is fine and the staff are friendly.

Some holes toward the end of the back nine are quite long for par 4s but there is no reason why you still can't par those 3 or 4 holes.

Apart from one hole (the par 5 12th) where if you play 2 regulation shots to be in the middle of the fairway 100m out and find a 25 metre tall tree in front of you, this course is suited for both high and low handicappers.

First time at OGC yesterday and i can say i wasn't dissapointed one bit, some long holes but not so challenging, but If your the big hitter that can hit straight this course would be for you, definately going to be back there next weekend for another round of 18.

Some golf courses have a great feel to them the second you walk onto them, and this is one of them. I live nearby (20 minutes drive) and have driven past the course (down Blunder Road) for many years, always wondering what it was like to play. Well recently I got the opportunity and can I say this course is one of the better ones to be found in Brisbane, with well maintained and manicured greens and a number of challenging holes. Hit your driver well and scoring low is not out of the question. Having a local with you to tell you when to lay back and hit an iron would also be a big advantage.

The staff are all very friendly and only to pleased to help. The clubhouse is a little tired, but the course more than makes up for that. Overall one of those hidden gem club courses (along with Redcliffe & Redland Bay) that shouldn't be missed if the chance arrives to play there.

Probabley the pick of the golf courses in Brisbane, slick greens nice rolling fairways, very picturess golf course not to exspensive, if I remember rightly around $25 to $30 a round.

What I enjoy most about this golf course is the par 4s you can attack or hit a iron of the tee, if you attack some holes are easily reachable with your driver.

Proshop very helpfull, overall facilities outstanding.

Once again a course anyone would love to be a member.

Course 9.5/10

Oxley provides a user friendly, yet challenging layout.

It rewards aggressive play on all of the par 5's - but watchout as danger awaits any errant shots.

The par 3's are varied with the 9th being the shortest and is an absolute gem. The 13th is the longest (215m) and a par here is highly treasured.

The Par 4's also present much variety. The 6th looks deceptively short & easy, but a good stategy here is to lay up short of the fairway bunkers and leave a full short iron approach. The 15th & 16th holes are 2 brutes and are rated 1 & 2 on the card.

Course condition is consistently good at Oxley and the membership is among the friendliest in the state.

You will always enjoy a round at Oxley.
