Portsea is known as one of the best wet weather courses in Australia because of the huge amount of sand base, and as recently as January 2002 the course was rated in Golf Australia as number 25 in the country.

Todays members and visitors enjoy playing on a course set amongst sand dunes and which consistently rates as one of Australia’s finest. Recent design improvements in bunkering, teeing grounds and greens have further enhanced the course. The natural drainage qualities of soils found in the Portsea area also ensures that golfers enjoy a firm footing all year round.

The Club holds several Tournaments throughout the year for Amateurs and Professionals alike. Among these are the “Carlton” Portsea Pro-Am which is held annually on January 2nd and is regarded as being one of the best Tournaments of it’s type in Australia. A 72 hole Amateur event is held in July and a 5 day Spring Tournament is held in November. The club is also proud to conduct a number of events with proceeds being donated to various charitable organizations.

Wow. Fisrt time playing here and first impression is this course is great. Granted we had great weather with little wind but usually when I play bad I leave not wanting to come back. Even with my woeful score, I can’t wait to get back here.
The condition and presentation are good but not spectacular. The greens would be amongst the quickest I’ve played on and run true. If your line or speed are off then three puts are easily achieved. Still soft enough though for you to stick your chip shots.
Although not long, the variety of exposed holes and elevation changes means you need to use your head and not just drive and chip (mental note for hole #11 next time). Most holes compliment the lay of the land and you can tell the course is built on top of sand dunes. You’ll find greens tucked into natural amphitheatres or pirched on top of a ridge.
I can imagine a reasonable wind will make some holes much more of a challenge but no more than you find on other courses in the area. Given it’s cheaper to play here compared to places like the Dunes, Moonah or St Andrews, I will be back here. It’s worth the drive down from Melbourne.

Played Portsea today in a 4 Ball Ambrose comp. As the course hasn’t been rated for quite some time I thought I shed some current views.

Absolutely great condition apart from some minor GUR on 18th but local rules address this. As it is basically right of the fairway it wasn’t a problem for us today. The greens had been cored in the first week of September so they were in great condition but my playing partners commented on them being a little slower then they expected. I felt comfortable with them as it gave me a chance to hit some firm putts without the fear of running 20 feet past.

Ambrose doesn’t usually require you to play out of bunkers but we had one hole today (13th right green side) where we had to. The sand was very consistant (after picking my ball out of other bunkers throughout the round) but had lttle stones/shells in it. More of a natural feel rather than poor condition.

Weather was fine with a breeze which came in to play on a few holes. As the day wore on it died and sitting on the clubhouse balcony overlooking the 18th fairway, it was magnificent.

It is a hilly course with a lot of steep drops from to to fairway and climbs to greens. If you have trouble walking a hilly course I recommend a buggy as some of my group were feeling it in the legs and body with 4 holes to go.

A must if you are given the opportunity to play there.

I played Portsea when there was a hint of a breeze so it was at it’s kindess. Even so, this is still a challenging course with plenty of bunkering and uneven fairways to test you out. Greens are in top condition with true rolls and plenty of undulations to make it interesting. Obviously the main downer of this wonderful course is the location – right at the tip of the Peninsula which makes it a considerable drive from Melbourne. Hopefully over time the word will spread as it certainly is comparable to the more well-known courses in the area.

absoloutley ….LOVED…. Portsea, certainly the hidden charm on the peninsular. Doesnt get alot of exposure, besides the PRO-AM in early January, but one of the best tracks in Australia, this is reflected in its constant rating as one of Australias top 50.

a must play

Early morning breakfast to start the day with a harsh head wind coming in from the west. This Semi links course is punishing for those who dont hit straight, undulation in the fairways, sharp hooks left and right. When you approach the greens the pin placement and quality is championship standard hard to read falls with breaks all around the pin. The cross over in greens can be a little confusing on 2 of the holes if you dont have local knowledge but truly a picturesuq course with great clubhouse amenities for the thirsty golfer after a round.

It was on one of those packages and I must admit Portsea was a great experience and different to any course in Sydney with the exception of Bonnie Doon.

The standout holes to me were 5, 8, 11, 13, 14, 17 & 18.

The 8th is an exhilarating par 5 and, while not long, the further you travel down this hole the tighter it gets and with a cross wind blowing it is quite scary with tea trees everywhere.

The 11th is an a superb short par 4 dogleg to the right. A tee shot semi blind over a big hill must be accurate and then it is up a steep ridge to a small green circled by trees. A magic little hole!

13 is an unusual par 4 where the longer hitters can have a go at the green at their peril but as the hole is steeply uphill nothing short of the perfect shot will result in a birdie opportunity.

Hole 17 is a classic downhill par 4 where you are required to thread you tee shot between waste bunkers on the left and pine trees on the right. The second shot here is majestic down hill to a green cut into a hill surrounded by bunkers.

18 is a good finishing hole thru an undulating hill cut thru the cypress pines.

This course was memorable and I can't wait to get back soon. It deserves the ratings it gets inside our top 30.

A challenge if it is very windy, but not when the breeze is normal.

It has some good holes but is way too short. The person who can keep the ball low will score well on any day.

In my opinion, this is the best course on the Peninsula. There is not a single bad hole, and some absolute gems, such as 2, 9 and 17.

The greens are great, and the bunkering is strategic yet penal if you find your way into one.

Definately worth making the trip from Melbourne, or visiting while you're in the area.
