Pymble Golf Course, located in the heart of Sydney’s beautiful North Shore residential district, is regarded as one of the finest inland courses in Australia. Surrounded by magnificent homes, the picturesque course measuring over 6100 metres, meanders through creek filled gullies and over heavily treed hills providing a golf experience of perhaps unequalled beauty and challenge.

Pymble is a private Club with a championship golf course. However the facilities are available to the public both for golf and functions as set out below.

Measures 6034m Par 72 with five par 3s ranging from 137-189m, eight par 4s ranging from 288-413m and five par 5s ranging from 438-504m.

The 4th and 13th fairways are adjoined by some modern and grand St Ives homes and townhouses along the rear of Pentecost Avenue and Cowan Road. Other than these holes I always seem to get this course layout confused with Pennant Hills as the rolling hills and finishing par 3 18th holes look and play similarly uphill at both courses with the clubhouse in the background.

The medium-tall tree-lined parkland style course has wide and lush kikuyu fairways, with medium-to-large sized greens which are bent grass and poa on some back nine holes which play consistent with good but not overly fast. Some of the kikuyu rough around the greens can be quite long and difficult to get out of. The large and flat couch teebeds were a pleasure to play off. The 9th and 13th changes have now increased the course’s sand traps to 68 bunkers.

Highlights include: the 504m straight 2nd (index 7) with a greenside bunker short left, the 413m Par 4 slightly downhill 4th (index 5) with OOB homes on the left with 2 bunkers short left & right to avoid, the 370m slight dogleg right 5th (index 1) with a right-sloping fairway off the tee, then slightly uphill to a green guarded by 2 bunkers short left & right, the newly constructed 303m 13th (index 15) with 5 fairway bunkers 200-240m off the elevated tee to avoid on the right towards the slightly elevated green guarded by 2 bunkers short & rear.
Finally the signature 365m slight dogleg right 16th (index 2) with a teeshot over the dam to the leftside is required to avoid water right, tall trees and 2 bunkers all on the dogleg corner, go too far left off the tee and the overhanging branches behind the 8th tee impede your shot to leftside of the green which has another creek 10m short across the fairway with 4 bunkers and manicured gardens surrounding the island garden-like green – my favourite hole by far!
Apart from the 189m 3rd, the par 3s are not long but definitely not easy to par with numerous bunkers and swales to avoid. And apart from the 2nd, the par 5s are generally short and the weakest component of the course.
Played here a few times now most recently 11/7/2011 with $60 competition fees booked through golflink.com.au. You don’t necessarily have to hit the ball straight here as the fairway landing areas are quite wide. Clubhouse is smallish with friendly staff and is great for functions.

The private course is well-maintained, though I feel it is overpriced for membership for me to join here. Definitely not as challenging and well-conditioned as Avondale, but Pymble has its challenges and is always in good condition. I probably wouldn’t rush back to play if invited, but if you have not played here and get the chance to, give it a go as they run open competitions no more than a few times a year.

Played the course on the weekend and it was in great condition. Two new holes were also a nice improvement since I last played.

Played Pymble in their open day July 2010.

I think its probably unfair to rate it at the moment because it was in very poor condition, they obviously have a major issue with their greens.

You could see that it has very good design and some great holes particularly on the back nine and I would like to play it again when its in good condition.

There are temporary greens on most holes that look like they are about to come into play so I don’t envy the members for the next six months or so…

I am a member at Pymble and have seen the course get better and better over the years. The overall condition of the course is great with the greens being fast and true. I don’t personally like the barrier grass surrounding the reens and if it rains, holes 9 and 14 do get very damp. However, there are some great holes with 15 and 16 being the best in my opinion and the course is awesome to play on all year round

Terrific course which is undergoing some minor repairs – cant wait to play late spring when in full bloom.
ideal for pulling the big dog out of the bag, as fairways reasonably wide and the tree line is patchy.
most 2nd shots are tricky with mass bunkers lining the fairway leading upto the greens & surrounding them. bring your pull buggy as the 6100m trek is all hills. great challenge – get on if you get a chance.

PROS

Good Group 1 course, few nice Par 4s but layout overly undulating. 2 Par 5s to start and Par 3 to finish detracts from the overall experience. Despite wet conditions in past few weeks, course condition needs attention. Nice clubhouse although you get the distinct impression its primary focus is on external functions rather than member enjoyment.

Pymble is a beautiful course in the St. Ives area of Sydney. It rivals Avondale and Killara as THE Nth Shore course. A golfers course and home to many low markers, aspiring touring pros and a very competitive Division one pennants team. It is both a very social club and also a track that demands precise play off the tee, challenging approach shots – a flat lie at Pymble is rare – and lightning fast but true greens.

The course winds around a beautiful valley and is played in 3 6 hole stretches that all start and finish near the clubhouse making it a good social club where having a drink after a round is part of the experience. For big hitters the par 5’s at Pymble offer little defense but spray it off the tee and you’ll often find yourself in deep kikyu rough or stymied behind thick trees and hitting down an adjacent fairway to try and find an opening to the green.

Put it in the wrong place on some of the greens and your ball will roll off the front or you’ll be putting or chipping over a ridge to a hard to read hole location. It’s a sleeper and some of the par 4’s are very tough. If you get a chance to play Pymble don’t hesitate. It’s a tough day at the office and a good test of your A game.

I’ve played Pymble about a dozen times in the last 10 years. Nothing much has changed. It is a good course but in truth much of the course suffers from too severe a slope away from the clubhouse and this defines and detracts from many of the holes. The better holes tend to play across the slope. For some reason the fairways have always been very spongy and the greens a little inconsistent in pace and mostly unimaginative. There are a significant number of better designed and presented courses in Sydney and this course rates somewhere between a 2 and a 3. By private course standards, I’ll settle on a 2.

Bring your biggest and best fairway wood that you have. We did play after the course was soaked with about 2 inchs of rsin in 1 hour but the course drained so we were allowed back out. Beautiful to play, nice fairways, true greens (they would be very quick if they were dry) and a nice walk with some nice holes like the 16th and the 4th. All round good course but don't expext to play to your hanicap as the greens and fairways are well protected by bunkers and thick rough. Ask Benny! Well worth a round if you can afford it. PS come in your Sunday best.

Played here years ago when my handicap was low enough to play in the NSW State titles & Pymble cup.

Always remembered it as a challenging course with beautiful fairways, greens & scenery.

Now days my son is lucky enough to play there each year in the schoolboys titles each January.

Each year he walks away saying that its one the very best he has played & he has played some great tracks.

We cannot wait for January to roll around each year he him to compete(don't know who enjoys it more!)

Pity it is private as its really is a jewel.

Pymble is a lovely walk..but a tough one.

Quite hilly but well maintained and challenging with excellent greens and recent changes to some holes adding both length and difficulty.

The 2nd is a monster Par 5 and a couple of terrific holes down at the bottom of the course.

Private but good people and worth a game anyday.
