Riversdale Golf Club

Melbourne, VIC | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

Riversdale is handily located in the suburb of Mount Waverley and easily accessible whether it is from the city (20 minutes on the freeway) or any other south eastern suburb of Melbourne. The fairways are amongst the best around with Santa Anna couch spread throughout and improved drainage means that even in the Winter the course will always be in good condition.

The dining facilities are tastefully appointed and overlook the course with large windows to help to create a sense of openness, which translates into a friendly and warm environment.

Riversdale Golf Club is also home to the Riversdale Cup, Australia’s premier amateur event, which is traditionally held each year at Riversdale over the Labour Day weekend.

I played at Riversdale yesterday in a competition against the members. My last review in April, 2010 and there was some course works with Club house refurbishments going on, so I thought I would update.

I will say that one of the members I played with commented on area’s I’m going to mention so this is not just my belief….

The greens were reasonably slow and there were probably 3 or 4 greens where they didn’t have a good covering of grass and were quite uneven and bumpy. One example was the 10th green.

Bunkers are still quite inconsistent with sand levels but I was told that the green keeper is intending to commence a program of work on the bunkers to remove the weed and grass growing into the fringes of them.

The fairways were green and quite lush and the undergrowth has been recently reduced to assist in quicker play. (Reduced incidents of lost balls and delasys while searching)

One interesting thing I haven’t come across before was their score card. It has provision for a lotto type recording process where you put a line through the circle denoting your score and at the end of the round (members) put the card into a machine and their score is automatically recorded and displayed on a computer screen in the lounge. No need to record the details manually.

This round was the first time in a while where I have played from the genuine tee ground on the par 5 13th. Definately a different hole when played from this position and which brings the bunkers in to play.

The club house works have been finalised and the improvements are excellent. The view from the balcony overlooking the 18th green and the 1st tee (in the distance) makes for a pleasant time with a drink in hand.

Overall this course is enjoyable to me because of the variety of holes and the lakes/creek. It can be quite exhausting, especially in summer, due to the steep hills and I would suggest anyone who struggles to walk 18 holes would be best suited to a cart.

A really nice place to play golf. Played there today as a reciprical member, went around with a member by the name of Pete, who was extreamly helpful. The greens were incredibly hard to hold and were like putting on a highway! Fairways were a joy to play on, however the ruff could get very nasty. Definatly a pleasure to play.

This is an updated review as I had the opportunity to play there today. I should say that I have played this course on a number of occassions but this would now have been up to 15 or so years ago. The course hasn’t changed a great deal since I was last there but the clubhouse is currently undergoing a substantial refurbishment. The works appear to be done in stages as the left end (as you face it from the 18th green)of the club house has been completed. There is a new outdoor balcony with chairs and tables and foldaway sun shades overhead. There has been work completed to a’spiral’ type section (on the right side of the clubhouse) which I’m not sure is for at this stage. I heard a wisper that they want the work completed by June, 2010 so that will be a good time to visit.

Today the greens still had a little amount of sand on each (possibly from recent coring)and were fairly receptive to pitch marks. I wouldn’t say the greens were slow but slower than I’ve known them be.
There condition did not detract from it’s playability and they will be back to normal very soon, I’m sure.

Unfortunately the 10th hole was closed for works (possibly drainage) and the 9th hole had workers behind the green (completing similar type work) We had to play a 90 mtr par 3 (12A) hole to make up for the 10th. Some bunkers I got into had good sand coverage and others not. (Fairway bunker on the 11th) A little inconsistant)

Overall still enjoyable and I’m a great rap for the way they have dammed the old creek and built lovely bridges over the water. Fairways were in great condition but still hilly in places so if you have trouble walking a course, you better hire a cart. If you get a chance to play don’t knock it back.

Rating slightly down due to current works

PROS

  • Fairways
  • Tee areas

Cons

  • Inconsistant bunkers
  • Current works resulting in closure of the 10th (Temp)

This will be a quick review by my standards, but it doesn’t need to be long winded. This course is amazing in just about all facets. It is difficult to fault it. Sure it is short in some parts but the Par 5 15th (I think)is a solid 520m uphill! But the short Par 4’s are no gimmes either.

I enjoyed this course far more than Moonah Links Open course, but then they aren’t the same ’type’. Still, I know which course would get my $100 if I had to choose…

All in all, superb. Greens, fairways, tees, trees, service, staff. You name it and they do it well. There is an air of ’pomposity’ about the place due to its exclusivity but I reckon that’s the Green Eyed Monster in me more than anything.

The only reason I don’t give this course 5 stars is that I believe that is a ’perfect’ score. And as I have quite a few courses left in the world to play (!!) I want to give myself room to move… :)

If you are lucky enough to get a round here, do not knock it back.

A grand experience from the moment you drive in the front gates, this is a very pretty golf course that offers changes in elevation on a number of holes.

Staff were excellent and enhanced the experience.

The course is not long and most of the holes are very straight.
