Royal Fremantle, established in 1905, is one of the few Golf Clubs that still occupies it’s original site and as such the course has grown and been developed more-so than planned and has had significantly less major earthworks than modern bush land courses.
Like Royal Melbourne, the course can be tamed on a still day, but when the prevailing sea breeze arrives after midday, only the best swings survive!
Royal Fremantle at 6076m is not long by modern standards. Plans are in place to lengthen some tees as part of regular course maintenance and development plans but in keeping with the original intentions to provide a Club for all players and to encourage participation in the sport, Royal Fremantle is not about providing a championship venue for professional tournament play to be utilized once a year. The course is well maintained with clearly defined Kikuyu fairways that are amongst the best all year round in the country, tidy tee boxes and Bent grass “napkin” greens on all but two holes that have been recently replaced that are deceptively quick however when a shot goes astray the penalty is fair and there is always a chance to manufacture a shot from under the trees to get the ball back into play
That said, the Course Record of 64 held by David Podlich is testament that the course is no push over. The last major event held at Royal Fremantle was the 2002 Western Australian Amateur Open and only rising star and Australian Amateur Runner-Up, Michael Sim was able to record more than one sub-par round over four days of tournament play.
Royal Fremantle will host the 2005 National Interstate Series as part of thier Centenary Celebrations.
Rounds are available only on Sunday by arrangment with the General Manager. Corporate group bookings available from $45 per player.

I played RFGC for the first time during Div. 5 pennants in July 2010. The course was very well presented, not overly long but has some tough par 4’s. Some of these included the 1st, 4th, 7th and 13th out of the holes I played in my match before winning 6/4. Other holes like the par 5’s – 2nd and 11th require well positioned shots to salvage a par or birdie rather than length. I enjoyed the 154m par 3 – 3rd. The elevation changes of the course make it a bit like Yokine, just nowhere near as tough.
I took a heap of photos as the course presentation was wonderful and bunkering the real highlight for me. The kikuyu fairways make you earn every meter of length you get. The greens were a bit slow IMO and potentially the only real criticism I had. They were much easier to put on than my home course and had very little breaks to bring concern.
I’d describe Royal Fremantle as a very asthetic, relaxing and enjoyable course to play. Even with the terrible weather I experienced the day I played it, I still wouldn’t say it’s overly challenging, however good course management and knowing the right places to miss greens (whenever you do miss) is the key to shooting low numbers there. I’ll definitely be back for sure.
