Royal Fremantle Golf Club

Perth, WA | User Rating: Rate-3 (3.5) | Add A Review

Royal Fremantle, established in 1905, is one of the few Golf Clubs that still occupies it’s original site and as such the course has grown and been developed more-so than planned and has had significantly less major earthworks than modern bush land courses.

Like Royal Melbourne, the course can be tamed on a still day, but when the prevailing sea breeze arrives after midday, only the best swings survive!

Royal Fremantle at 6076m is not long by modern standards. Plans are in place to lengthen some tees as part of regular course maintenance and development plans but in keeping with the original intentions to provide a Club for all players and to encourage participation in the sport, Royal Fremantle is not about providing a championship venue for professional tournament play to be utilized once a year. The course is well maintained with clearly defined Kikuyu fairways that are amongst the best all year round in the country, tidy tee boxes and Bent grass “napkin” greens on all but two holes that have been recently replaced that are deceptively quick however when a shot goes astray the penalty is fair and there is always a chance to manufacture a shot from under the trees to get the ball back into play

That said, the Course Record of 64 held by David Podlich is testament that the course is no push over. The last major event held at Royal Fremantle was the 2002 Western Australian Amateur Open and only rising star and Australian Amateur Runner-Up, Michael Sim was able to record more than one sub-par round over four days of tournament play.

Royal Fremantle will host the 2005 National Interstate Series as part of thier Centenary Celebrations.

Rounds are available only on Sunday by arrangment with the General Manager. Corporate group bookings available from $45 per player.

Played this week in the comp, great members who really showed me around on a windy day where I played like rubbish. Re the course, some interesting holes with great use of doglegs but I have to say I did not enjoy the greens, slow and uneven in pace. Good bunkering and a reasonable quality course which will benefit from the in progress works. Would I play there again?, not sure

Sorry but Royal Fremantle is a hole. I have been a member there for 20years; it doesn’t care about its members, the board of governance is not in touch with the club, and the greens are always terrible, bumpy and slow. If your thinking about membership run a mile!!

Very enjoyable course with good variety of holes. Would have considered becoming a member here if I lived south of the river.

I played on a day when there was only 15-20 knots of wind avoiding the infamous fremantle doctor. The course is in excellent condition, greens were not too quick. This is not the most challenging course that I have played however it provides a good test for any golfer. Whilst the rough is not as bad as some courses, you are not always guaranteed to find your ball.

Excellent practice facilities with a driving range, two chipping greens and two putting greens. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Whilst on the surface RFGC seems like a fairly straight forward course.. To the uninitiated golfer who are use to the public courses, RFGC proves to be a longer than usual place to play... playing even longer when the Fremantle Doctor is coming at you at a million miles an hour... a good test for you handicap. Wide fairways can be forgiving, and even tempt you to pull out the driver everytime. But remember if u hit them wayward, you may still have some long second shots to try and hit the greens that are often guarded by deep grainy bunkers.

With the added bonus of a dedicated practice fairway, putting AND chipping greens as well as a practice bunker, it is definitely a nice place to be a member. But just remember if your not, it's $60 a round :)

Doesn't try to be anything it isn't - just a good place to be a member.

Good course, lot's of variety and some nice undulating terrain (and a few hills). A good day out without being anything special - pity about the Kikuyu however - for some reason this seems to be a problem on a lot of Perth courses.
