Spring Valley Golf Club

Melbourne, VIC | User Rating: Rate-3 (3.5) | Add A Review

The term “Hidden Jewel” was first used by renowned golf course critic, Tom Ramsay to describe the Spring Valley Golf Course.

Located in the heart of the Melbourne sandbelt, Spring Valley is a fine example of the work of Vern Morcom the son of Mick, the famous constructor who put all of Alister Mackenzie’s work on the ground in Melbourne.

For those who relish the topography at Royal Melbourne they will find Spring Valley to be a flatter course much like Kingston Heath which is just down the road. Morcom crafted some of his finest bunkers and greens here. Ben Crenshaw, himself, is an admirer of Morcom’s work at Spring Valley and made a special trip to see the course and to study his work. The holes demand well shaped shots from the tees and the irons to the flags must be played with precision.

Spring Valley is what would be referred to as a traditional course. That is something very much back in fashion and a characteristic to be admired.

Spring Valley Golf Club is THE most underrated course in Australia and a true, quality sandbelt course.
I played at Spring Valley in the death of winter (for $35) with a couple of members that I met on the first tee and I have never been more impressed with a course. Heavy overnight rainfall showed no sign on the course besides one fairway bunker on the 9th which was surrounded by groundstaff tending to it prior to my 7:56am tee time.
The couch fairways were obviously dormant as it was August but were firm, short and pristine.
The condition of the course cannot be faulted and from previous reviews it is no such complaint. It is a standout compared to any course on the sandbelt.

The other standouts, would be the bunkering and greens. Shapely and inventive bunkering to the highest standard and greens that were fast and true.

The par 71 layout gives players opportunities to score on short par 5’s but that is quickly matched with long par 4’s some requiring mid-long irons for big hitters.

I think the only general improvements would be to shape fairways a little more. From what I gather the course has been member-proofed to make it more accommodating for the older players. I can imagine this course playing 3-4 shots harder from back tee’s and when the wind is up.

But there really is little to fault – including "the smell". I was apparently there on a bad day and I never even noticed it.

A really great experience and makes me review my membership to a surrounding sandbelt course.

PROS

  • Condition
  • Greens
  • Design

Cons

  • Front tees don't involve bunkers in shot decision's

I played today in a social golf club day 4BBB day. Although I didn’t get the chance to play all the elements myself I did get the opportunity to play the course, after not playing it for possibly 15 years. We had cold conditions, showers and wind.

Appart from the upgrade in the club house I was suprised about the change in the 10th hole direction. Now pointing in the direction of the 11th hole, I always remembered the 10th to be surrounded in bunkers and, depending on the wind, very hard to hit even though it was a short hole.

As for the condition I was VERY impressed. Having played Waterford Valley last week (who charge $55 – see review)and which is a bog at the moment during the winter rains; this course was in excellent condition. The only evidence of rain was a couple of greens with casual water but staff were out working in them today and they appeared a treat. Unfortunately I didn’t get to play a shot out of them as we took the better placed ball.

Although the fairways are yellow/white in appearence, they give a good lie and you still get roll on your drives.

The greens are above average in speed and most especially if you are putting down hill.

My memories of this course, last time I played, were happy but I think the changes have only made it a better course and one that is under-rated. The new club house is modern and cater for most needs. If you ever get a chance to play there; no matter what time of the year, don’t knock it back

Spring Valley is def one of Melbs hidden gems. Has made the the Vic Open the best tournament on the Von Nida Tour. Amazing golf course that is kept in great condition all year round, condition as good as any royal or the Heath ect. As for they guy driving 3 par 4’s i really doubt that. The 4th hole is a short par 4 and is one of the best par 4’s in Melb. Def worth the money if you havent played it.

Played spring valley in december 09, with high expectations having read the other reviews and course description. I agree the course is generally in good condition with exception to some of the bunkers, which were like concrete!
However it is hardly a memorable golf course, most of the par 4’s are very same same. Similar length and a few are quite drivable. I play off 9 and I tagged up with another guy off 6 and he drove three of the par 4’s one with a miss hit.
Huge new clubhouse which is nice and is probably the thing that stick in the mind most, as well as the drive in through a industrial estate
Typical over 60’s golf course.

i believe that the other reveiws dont justify how good spring valley is, from tee to green the course is in exelant condition and plays as good as any other sandbelt course. The course offers challange to golfers of all handicaps and offers non members the oppertunity to experiance a private golf club. i would say that spring valley is an up and coming course that will impress all

I rate this course very highly. if you ever get the chance to play it get on. Excellent fairways & tee boxs, true greens. The best club house in the sand belt. Its only fault it can be a little smelly in the summer when it blows north.

All credit to the groundstaff as this is a nicely manicured course. Fairways are a bit firmer than most but very lush. Bunkers are well maintained and the greens are in top condition.

However to the bad points. The smell from the neighbouring landfill site is quite bad from hole 3-7, it does detract from the experience. Also the layout is not challenging. With a good tee shot, you can clear most fairway bunkers.

So when you consider the price and the other courses available, you can find better value for money if you like a challenge.

$80 a round? Are you kidding me?

We had a very pleasant game round The Valley, but nothing more. It is no real test of golf, myself a 12 handicapper having a very average day, but shooting 83….if you hit the ball consistently further than 230-250m off the tee you could easily break par here. It is a traditional layout, but not in the league of Royal Melbourne and Kingston Health. In fact, mentioning them in the same sentence is an in justice to those two Masterpieces!!!

Having played some of the courses on the fringe of the city, from 13th beach to anything on Mornington Penn…The Valley has nothing…let me repeat that….nothing on any of those courses.

Even if you get the iseekgolf discount, it is difficult to justify spending over $60 on green fees alone, when you can get a cart and green fee for the same at Waterford Valley.

In review…an overall nice relaxed round of golf, but not worth the cash.

PROS

  • Good Greens
  • Top quality greenside bunkering
  • Too short

Cons

  • The Smell
  • Bunkers not in play enough off the tee
  • WAY TOO EXPENSIVE
