We were booked in to play in June with carts but the Hunter was going thru its normal rain period and after discussion with the friendly course pros Marcus and Nathan we decided to reschedule to July. Well having never played there before we all got quite a shock.
The course was still heavy after a lot of rain with not much run.If you thought it was doing to be a drive and chip style of course, think again. Its only 9 holes but 2 sets of tees changes not only the length of the hole but also the target. Nearly all holes have some water to worry about, and while the fairways are generous its them wooden things lining either side of the fairway you can’t dismiss. A wayward tee shot leaves you in plenty of trouble.
The greens were soft and responsive with plenty of undulations, some resembling upside down saucers. It is a country course alright but for the price represents good value with plenty of fun to be had.

Our group:a small social club (age 50-64)16 players who lost 29 balls to the creeks and the dam.

A group of ladies played at Branxton last week and we found the course well maintained and very interesting especialy the first, second and seventh holes. Although a 9 hole course, the back nine has different tee off positions which makes the holes very different. The greens are rather fast and some to lob on.We had very nice lunch at the club house and came across some very friendly locals. Avery nice day of golf and a surprisingly hard course.

Measured Par 35 2771m with three Par 3s ranging from 130-140m, four Par 4s ranging from 325-400m and 2 back-to-back Par 5s ranging from 455-480m. Course is fairly easy with flat, bone-dry brown-yellow fairways, slow upside-down saucerlike grass greens, with not too bad teebeds. Some holes have good length, but the bunker-green complex is not planned at all.

Best holes are probably the Par 5s which both has water to contend with off the tee, with greens guarded by left and rightside bunkers. The Par 4s are less demanding and are all fairly straightish.

Played here 7/4/06 and paid $15 for 9 holes. It has a decent clubhouse with most facilities available and is fairly ok course for a social hit.

Played Branxton GC 9 July 05. Friendly pro and golfers. Easy to get on the course after 1230pm on Saturdays.

Tee-ed up not expecting much more than a simple country course. What a surprise! Nearly all the holes are deceptively difficult (for a mid to high handciapper). Walking to take your 2nd on the 1st hole and being confronted by a small "up turned saucer"green with water, bunkers and OOB protecting it is a bit of a shock. None of which you can really see from the tee. Accuracy off the tee is essential as the tree lined fairways are narrow.

The greens were fast and difficult. They can do some damage to your score card. Many have pins close to the edge that drops away into OOB or water. Your approach and putt needs to be good. The 8th with a multi level, multi slope green is diabolical but fun.

Unlike many 9 holers, Branxton has a couple of very different tee positions in the back 9. 2 of which add substantial water to the tee shot. Many bring OOB or other hazards into play the second time around.

Most of the time, players are blind from the tee as the pins are obscured by either dog legs or trees or both. Long par 4's and varying length par 3's add some interest. Club choice is important and you'll use the full range of them in your bag.

Cheap as chips, even by country standards, and away from the maddening crowds on much more expensive Hunter courses. Well worth playing and I'll be back.

After hearing a few good reports about this course I was very dissappointed to say the least, poor greens makes it impossible to sink any putts and a fairly average layout makes this course one of the worst I've played. Shame really when it is so close to the Vineyards.

One for the beginner
