Played at Strathfield for the first time today, in great condition! Fairways were immaculate, very lush as were the tees, obviously well maintained by the green staff. The greens were a touch disappointing as they were quite slow and a little bumpy. The rough is quite long meaning that keeping your ball on the fairway is critical, quite easy to catch it ’fat’ or a ’flyer’ out of the rough. The best of the holes are the 1st, a short par 4 at 319m where par is very achievable. The 4th, a 400m par 4 has a demanding tee shot with water all along th left and trees right. Many of the par 4’s are very similiar in that 300-380m bracket with slight doglegs, possibly a bit boring if you play there every week.
The main area of improvement required is some DIRECTIONS, in a group with no members we were lost as to where the next tee is numerous times, some signs would be very helpful!
Strathfield provides excellent practice facilities, with a 150m grass range, chipping green, putting green and warm up htting nets, these were all great, especially the range, where the hitting area was awesome!
The Pro Shop lacks a little with more ex-demo and pre-loved clubs than new clubs, there are however, a wide range of wedges and putters. An extensive clothing range with Addidas and Footjoy apparel. plenty of Hire clubs/buggies available.
Well worth a visit to test out all aspects of your game at a wellmaintained course!

PROS

  • Excellent practice range
  • Well maintained Fairways/tees

A nice course, but nothing too spectacular. Very lush faorways and well presented, but there is not much variety fro, hole to hole and playing there week in week out might make things a bit dull.

Not great value for golfers here – slow greens – poor fairways – straight up and down holes – and expensive fees. I did not enjoy this at all and will not be going back. Lost 1/2 a start cause its $20 over priced @ $45

Played here last week. Nice lush fairways with the worst greens I’ve played on ! Not a place I’ll rush back to.

Great course for the average golfer. The condition of the course was excellent with very good fairways and greens. It is obvious that the club cares as new gardens are being planted. I played with 3 members and they were friendly and helpful. I felt it was very fair but you can get into trouble if you miss the fairways or greens. Being a woman golfer it was good to play on a course that provides a tough test of golf equivalent to that for men. A number of tees are only a few metres apart, while on tougher holes the water was still in play (unlike many courses who do not believe women can hit over water!). I understand women can play in competitions on Saurday so I am thinking of joining.

boring boring boring, all i can say, played here about 3 weeks ago, green fees are way too expensive for this place, members of this course are arrogant and dont mind hitting up on you at all, fairways are in pretty good condition as they should be this time of the year, just not what i expected from a group 1 course, greens are pathetic especially with couch surrounds on some and then some without, total inconsistency on the greens,i am no hacker either i play off 9,the ground staff are just plain rude, will just drive past while in mid swing and i even had my ball run over and damaged mid hole, seems like they are spending more time on garden maintenance than course maintenance.hated the whole day will never play here again.much rather play carnarvon down the road, a much better layout and the condition way outshines strathfield.

I have not played Strathfield for a number of years and was pleasantly surprised in the improvements made. The layout has changed and it seems more interesting, but there has been a significant improvement in the quality of the course.

The fairways are lush (not much run!) and the rough is fair, however, it is the greens and surrounds that have improved the most. the greens were consistent, reasonably quick and rolled really well.

The course super has obviously been making a concerted effort to present the course as an attractive layout, with creek cleaned up and gardens well maintained.

I found the course not too difficult but you have to play well to break your handicap. Well worthwhile a visit to play in an open day.

played last thursday. i liked it, good walking distance. turf is good from tee to green, couple little bare spots on a few greens, but they didnt come into play.

bunkers were good but got stuck with my ball landing on the edge where it looks like sand has been building up for quite sumtime, made it hard to play off. apart from this minor set bak thought the course was presented well, credit to course staff for their work.

just think the layout could be made a bit more interesting,

I had the pleasure of playing Strathfield Golf Course last Sunday for the second time in three years – what an improvement. The fairways are narrow but in great condition. The greens have been vastly improved with obvious dedication and the future looks good. There have been some drastic changes to the course layout and a member told me there is another change to the rotation that will increase the flow and break up the Par 3’s. Stayed for dinner on Sunday night – great food, reasonable prices and very friendly club house. My member host told me of a new fee structure that will suit most players of all ages and incomes, that you can tailor to suit your personal playing requirement – am seriously considering joining!

Played here today on 11th Feb 08. It is not a very pleasant experience. Course is on maintenance but the proshop didn’t notify me. The guy at the proshop is NOT friendly at all!! Dont know how he get the job or he OWN the course. Green fees is ridiculous expensive and does not reflect with the course condition. Green condition is crap, some of the ground staffs working there are crap, and the course needs maor improvements!

Not looking forward to play here again unless they do something about the course and the staff.

Found this course to be very straight forward with not much imagination required on most of the holes. The course looked great from the tees but once you got out there the fairways had low and high areas all over the place and the greens had bare areas covered by sand in some spots. Looks like some sort of disease may have hit them. The greens were a little 2 paced, they had a lot of Poa in the bent grass which looked a bit unsightly and speeds varied green to green. I wasn’t made to feel welcome at this course being a non member by the pro shop attendant or (the non English) speaking members which was a little disappointing since I was really excited about playing there after driving past it many times. In the end found the joint very over rated! Feel sorry for anyone forking out big $$ to play there.

Played here for the first time a few weeks ago. I like the place, not overly long but still requires smart play. Condition of the greens are at the moment the best in Sydney. Only thing that would I don’t like the 13th Hole, seems to be a fill in hole.

Cons

  • Lack of Length

Nearly 3 years since last review and now measures 5972m Par 71 from the back plates with four Par 3s ranging from 120-175m, 11 Par 4s ranging from 320-405m and 3 Par 5s ranging from 455-480m. The greens were a little slow, allowing me less than 30 total putts. I quite liked the bunkers that protect most greens, and the teebeds were quite smooth, while the fairways were surprisingly green given the dry period Sydney is in. The Cooks River begins its journey to Botany Bay nearby, and is environmentally protected and OOB for its entire length through the course.

The course has 8 holes on the clubhouse side and 10 holes on the other side of Centenary Drive. Very flat (boring?) layout, with the best holes to come once you go under Centenary Drive. They offer more challenge, a few doglegs, and some OOB water (though not necessarily in play). Par 5s here (8th, 9th, 10th) do not get my respect, but the heavily bunkered large double-tiered greens of the par 3s (2nd, 7th, 12th, 13th) do. Good length on the par 4s, but some lack a challenge, as you can find yourself hitting the same mid-iron into the green.

Played here 9/5/06 with green fees $45 and around $35 for a cart. Pretty nice clubhouse too. I might wait for an invite only to play here again though.

You can see some of the holes of this course from Centenary Drive, and what you can see is typical of the rest of the course. First-time visitors need to know that you cannot reach the course from the west or south. You must go 'around the block' to the north side and come down Centenary Drive.

The course is absolutely flat, with every hole lined by trees on both sides. Most of the fairways are fairly narrow, so accuracy is important. However, the big hitter who can find the fairways consistently will eat this place up, as the par 5's are weak and short, and there are a few friendly par 4's as well.

The greens are good and quite challenging, with some hard to read slopes.

By far the best hole is the last, a 380 metre par 4 to an elevated green with a bunker guarding the left front that makes hitting and then holding the green a real battle.

The course condition is excellent, with perfect kikuyu fairways, well maintained bunkers and very good putting surfaces that held a well-struck short iron.

Strathfield is OK for an occasional visit, but it's not worth the annual fees that the members pay.

Generally in reasonable condition, although quite a boring layout. Have made some changes over the last 5 years for the better, but there are still too many holes that are the same.

The only course that I've with 3 par 5's in a row.
