Very nice course that is an oasis surrounded by factories and major roads. Kept in very good condition and no long rough to contend with as it is not getting watered and is poor soil quality. Really well designed for the lack of space it does have.

Nice challenging course. Can get very windy at times, good for all standards of golfers. Had to wait 70minutes to start our prebooked round. Totally unacceptable.

Played here in the evening a few weeks back. It was nothing like I expected. I thought it would be flat and featureless and it was anything but. All the holes are different from one another and all the holes are good. I don’t think you can ask anything more than that. It’s very well designed.

The fairways were in fine condition and the ball just keeps rolling and the greens were smooth and true. I only 3-putted one hole and for a hack like me that’s good going and is a testament to the state of the greens.

My only complaints are as follows. Some of the holes are endless and would it hurt them to print a map on the scorecard? I know they have signage at the tees but that is no help when you’re halfway down the fairway and you can see neither the green nor the tee. If you’ve not played there before that can be very dispiriting. I actually thought once " Where am I supposed to hit this? The ball’s not lost but I am."

Also those mounds that shape the holes are made of clay and rocks, they were like concrete. They are not suitable for a golf course. Keeping off them is easier said than done.

All the holes run east/west which means if you play in the twilight you are staring straight at the sun and it’s blinding and it really affected my enjoyment of the game. I imagine the same is true of early mornings.

That aside I’d play there anytime I enjoyed it a great deal.

played 9 holes last sunday morning, found the staff very friendly and happy to talk about the course, membership options etc

club house and pro shop loook good, i did the front 9 playing with 2 locals / regulars.

Front 9 is enjoyable, lots of dog legs, blind over the hill tee shots and large greens so putting is important here, quite a few risk v reward options as well.

Fairways were in good condition, only some boggy area’s at the bottom of the greens (but not elsewhere on the course)

it was a slow round though at 2 1/2 hours and i’ve heard it can be slow game there.

Drinks cart also comes round witrh pies, beer and soft drinks etc

Overall very likeable – the back 9 is meant to be harder with lots of water in play so i’ll be back.

I played here on the 3rd of October 2010, and I must say, I was excruciatingly touchy about going out here, purely because I was worried chopper was going to bite my ear lobe off and try super glue it back onto his, but it was more than worth it. I played in the Sunshine Junior Open, my third junior tournament, and the day was run to perfection.

I was having swing troubles leading up to the event, that and the omittion of driver due to shaft issues (pun not intended), did not help my confidence. I play off 21, and my lack of confidence showed up deliciously at the start of the round, being +11 after four holes. I didn’t hit any rhythm until the back nine, when I started the fire a bit. I was +2 on the back 9, including a triple bogey on a terribly played par 3.

I did however win the long drive competition coming up the 18th, outhitting my 6-handicapper playing partner with a 275 meter 3-wood, which was enough to win the B-grade and A-grade long drive comp :D

My nett 64 wasn’t enough to win however, with some stupid 14 year old off 32 who shot some ridiculous score.

Anyway, enough about the comp, let’s move onto the course.

Listening to the starter lady on the first tee talk about how the course suffered immensely throughout the torrential rain-affected winter only made me appreciate more how the course had pulled up. One would not have guessed that the course was severely waterlogged for the majority of the winter season.

The greens didn’t have any poa weed like pebble beach during the US open, and play quite true. They were perfectly manicured, but played a little slower than they appeared, which wasn’t a problem, because it allowed players to hit the ball a little firmer to get a better feel for putts.

The fairways were very well maintained, with all fairways giving fantastic lies. A characteristic of Sunshine is the rough. It has almost desert-like rough, with patches of dried cracked earth surrounded by heavy grass. There was a fair bit of water, but nothing more than reasonable, which didn’t come into play too often except for the 11th tee shot.

The bunkers were very pretty, which almost made me want to hit out of them. WARNING TO ANYONE PLAYING OUT OF A BUNKER HERE!!! They look sandbeltish in regards to the amount of sand and the depth of the hard base, but let it be well known, that they are EXTREMELY BARE. They aren’t bare in the sense that there isn’t much sand, but your club only has to be about 3cm below the sand to feel like you’ve just played a flop shot off Chuck Norris. In other words, they are hard.

Apart from that little detail, I highly recommend this course, and it will come up a treat as the sun starts to shine.

One last thing, wear your body armour, after all, it IS Sunshine. You probably have more chance of being stabbed here than having a guy hump your at your locker in school.

PROS

  • True greens, well conditioned fairways, challenges better players to take on the course

Cons

  • Deceivingly shallow bunkers, you will probably get stabbed if you hang around long enough.

Sunshine, Sunshine, Sunshine, what can I say about this place. Well it’s the place where gangster’s dreams are made and innocent by-standers faces are caved. A place where knives are on schools book lists and golf clubs are more regularly used in gang fights than at a golf course.

There are certain things in life that you never envision yourself doing. Going to Sunshine for anything other than punching on, prostitution or scoring some ’A’ grade golden triangle smack are just a few things that pop to mind. However a few weeks ago I ventured back to this glorious suburb for a round of golf.

I will be the first to admit when I am wrong and this is one of those cases. There is no doubting that Sunshine Golf Course is the best thing to come out of the Sunshine area since Danny Del-Ra was running around for the Bulldogs at the Western Oval in the late 80’s- early 90’s.

The golf course is surprisingly free of used syringes and old pipes that were once part of a proud owners bong. The key feature of the course is now referred to as the great wall of Sunshine. Now I am by no means a historical buff, I however do have a fascination with all cultural aspects of our glorious city.

Now Dave down at Sunshine-Mart likes to reminisce about a time before Sunshine required the great wall. His story goes as following;

“Now my friends I will take you back to a time, a time when Sunshine stood as one local suburb. A time when parents who resided in this thriving economically booming, culturally sophisticated suburb of Sunshine did not have to pray that their children make it home alive form school.”

“However on one fateful morning, a cold chilling story of deceit and retribution would rock this suburb like no other bomb could. Two young educated, innocent males were strolling casually home from the much sought after Sunshine Technical College when a car approached them. This is where the story changes depending on what type of smack Dave has smoked and or injected on any particular day.”

“Basically the boys came under fire from the St. Alban’s Crew and as the days passed these horrendous attacks became more frequent and more horrendous each time. The local people of Sunshine were at war and they could see no option on how to stop the constants attacks.”

“They were at war, and they were losing big time. It was sad to see innocent young men lose their lives, therefore they devised a great plan, a glorious plan. The plan was a wall, but not just any wall it would be the greatest wall that Sunshine had ever seen. They called it the ‘Great Wall of Sunshine’.”

Fast forward 50 years and some 23 years since St. Albans and Sunshine signed a truce so they could both concentrate on their war with the Melton Waves. The wall is still partially in Sunshine and it runs straight through the golf course, it’s not the ideal place for a wall or golf course for that matter, however it adds to the cultural value of the course.

The course is 18 holes and rather hilly with some tricky water hazards. By tricky I mean when the Sunshine boys tie a rock to your leg, hand cuff you and then proceed to throw you in the water it can be rather tricky to get out alive.

PROS

  • Great course layout
  • Made it out alive

Cons

  • Car got stolen from course
  • Dave wasn't at the Sunshine-Mart

This is an update. I don’t want to lead anyone on, I am a current member. The course has matured a bit since my last review. On balance I think I was a little generous last time.

Its a decent course with some good holes. The strong winds significantly add to the challenge. The tees, greens and fairways generally are good playing surfaces. The bunkers are very ordinary and thats unlikely to change any time soon.

The rough consists of areas of uncultivated ground for the most part. The areas of roughs that have been sown are gradually taking and are good. The uncultivated areas don’t bother me at all, the main issue with the rough are the areas of weeds. This can make locating your ball a challenge on some parts of the course.

The driving range is good. The practice putting green isn’t great as the slopes and shape reduce the effective area significantly. There are no short game facilities to speak of. The club has a bit of work to do if it is to make good on the promises it has made to members over the last few years.

Its a pretty easy course to get a game at if you plan ahead at so for social players / vistors. Its also pretty handy to the Western Ring Road and Western Freeway/Deer Park Bypass

Always enjoy playing there. It is only getting better day to day. I can book online now and get a discount green fee. Getting a game on Sundays is tough due to the high number of members. Thinking about joining at the moment as their is no joining fee until end of April and it will give me a better chance of playing there more regularly.
Anyone who doesnt play a lot can be a social member for $99 per year, play in the Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday comps by paying a green fee and have a handicap at the club.

Looking forward to many more visits as the location is perfect. Only 15 minutes from Yarraville and my mates all live within 20 minutes of the club.

Played Sunshine on Easter Monday with no problems of getting on the course etc.

The course itself was an interesting layout, unfortunately we didn’t play it in its best condition as they had lost the rough to form cracked clay beds and the greens hadn’t been touched over the easter break and so were long, slow and inconsistent.

Fairways were forgiving enough and also challenging enough and the use of the original walls etc. gave the course a memorable point of difference from many others. The only thing I was not impressed about with regards to the design was the size and construction of the greens which appeared to be small with very limited pin placement potential – also the greens are VERY exposed and wind must make them almost unplayable if quick.

Don’t bother going to Sunshine! We tried getting onto the course over the weekends for the last 6 months, but couldn’t get on until after 3pm. I finally got my first day off in 6 months during the week and thought I wish I could get back and give it another a go. We got there to tee off at 10 and we found out that a group from Qld had got down an hour earlier and the little man with an accent in the pro shop thought he could fit them in earlier. We had to wait for 20 people to hit off before us. I approached the little man in the pro shop only to be told that I should take my business elsewhere. What an joke! When we teed off there was 5 groups waiting. Once we got on the course we realised they had forgotten to put the catcher on the lawnmover, so if you hit the middle of the fairway you were hitting a ball buried in lawn clippings. This course has gone backwards in condition of late. Steer clear and go to Eynesbury or Sanctuary Lakes if in Western Suburbs. Happy hitting!

Cons

  • Normally windy
  • Bad course management

challenging course, wind & rain was not helpful… Could not stand the smell of poo on the 14-16 hole. Thats what you get in the west.

All in all, nice course but very tough.

Really nice course which is very challenging and in good condition. The rough unfortunately has died off and most of it is clay but once they replant it and the tree grow this course is going to be a cracker! The greens are very consistent and challenging.

Played here last week in howling rain and wind. Personally I love this course as it feels like a links course but isn’t quite one. The fairways and greens are coming along very nicely thanks to the reliable water supply. The water hazards also seem to have water in them!

It is a demanding course, particularly around the greens if they are slick. Having said that, considering the rough hasn’t grown out yet you aren’t penalised too much for a wayward shot.

Great sand in the bunkers with bunker position very sound as well.

The front nine traverses the ’hilly’ section near Derrimut Rd whilst the back nine covers the ’flat’ area near the Ring Rd and Deer Park Bypass. Some may lament the traffic and industrial skyline but personally I like it. I think it makes great use of the land and looks better than just another wharehouse.

It’s location right on the Ring Road makes it accessible from all directions including out of towners.

The staff were fantastic and the practice facilities were great also.

All in all, highly recommended, particularly during the week when green fees represent awesome value.

have played here a couple of times – early this month, and march last year and it is really coming along. the fairways and greens are very good and the rough is starting to take shape. have heard some critisism about the fact its a new course and not established yet. some truth in it, but if you can keep it on the fairway its great. extrememly friendly place for a hit and very well priced. best course at the price close to the city. clubhouse fracilities very good.

Played this course today and I must say I was impresses and agree with the other positive reviews on this page. The course is a bit of a challenge but also quiet forgiving. Once some of the trees grow up a bit it will be a really great course. Fairways are some of the best I have played on. If you do manage to go off track some of the ground id pretty hard but we are in the middle of a drought. Only took us 4 hours on the dot to get around 18.

Very nice course, will be back in the near future.

Its a decent layout with some really memorable holes, especially a couple of the par 5s and the par 3 15th. There are water hazards on the 1st and all of the back nine holes and it has a real presence on 7 of those holes. The allingment of the holes takes advantage of the prevailing winds which adds to the challenge.

The front nine is pretty hilly, although I can still manage to hump my bag around. Much of the rough is very nasty around 2-4 inches deep.

The course has suffered a fair bit due to lack of water. They have finally got the recycling plant going so with a bit of love and time the course should conidtion should signifcantly improve.

This is a review for new course

Played it while in Melbourne and its a great track. Its different to your standard sand belt course and thus the challenge of real golf (links) comes into play. The wind makes it tough but the fairway speed gives you a chance to bang it out there but at 6200 its no sunday stroll

The greens are quick but very true and they play fair, look the course has some ways to go with the rough still establishing itself

water comes into play a fair bit also

people were really freindly also. Will go back and play it again.

Played here during the lush winter months. Course is set in the back back drop of residential housing.

Course layout is quite challenging. On offer is a series of sharp dog-legs, water and sand for the first 12 or so holes. Layout is very interesting where ball placement is critical. Front nine rough is extremely dense and should be avoided where possible. Last four holes appear uneventful especially after the challenges the first 12 presents.

Greens are very good. Course is a hidden gem and should be played before it closes.
