Brisbane Golf Club

Brisbane, QLD | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

The Brisbane Golf Club offers to its members and their guests an undulating and challenging course. Since our modest beginnings in 1896 members and associates have enjoyed an exclusive yet friendly and supportive golfing environment. As the first golf club established in the Brisbane area, the course has hosted numerous State and National Championships and has evolved into a first class playing facility. The undulating terrain is challenging yet pleasurable to play.

The par of 71 consists of holes that vary in distance and degrees of difficulty (from a 540 metre par 5 to a 400 metre par 4 around the lake to short holes of 132 metres) all to large greens with a number of pin positions to offer a different course from day to day.

The Brisbane Golf Club is an exclusive private Golf Course. Members may introduce visitors on any day except those Saturdays not designated as invitation days.

I have been a member at BGC for several years, it can be a great course, in a great position, often it falls short of expectations via odd range of decisions by the committee and management. The members are a good bunch, playing at BGC can be slow play, associates who have rights very similar to members (@ half the price) plague to course 7 days a week. Add to this social club players on Sunday mornings (who knows whty we let social clubs on the course) and Corporate day during the week and it becomes quite tiresome with rounds getting up to 5/5.5 hours. It is a good members course, it is short, the fairways are fair, little tight, the greens used to be very good all year round as different grass is grown for the different seasons. At the moment the 9th hole is out of play, due to a major rework.

Nice course: long, reasonably wide, very little water, well-designed, rough not too severe. However, greens and fairways not in good condition at the moment, probably due to the drought.

BGC would have to be one of the most challenging courses in Brisbane. With beautiful greens and fairways it would have to be the most looked after course in all of Queensland. If you can play to your handicap there you must of played a brilliant round of golf. The staff members are friendly and the 2007 Ausralian club pro champion is the head pro there and offers great lessons for members.

This is one of the best courses in Brisbane. Not a resort course, but one of those beautiful old courses where it looks like God created the trees around the course. This is why it is not long because when it was built 200m was a HUGE drive. In saying that there are enough doglegs and well established trees, that it will be challenging to most mortal golfers. You must play with a member.

The course is good, but relatively short. Some weak holes like the 14th detract. The first and 9th holes should be par 4s. The staff and members are relatively unfriendly. Having often played pennants there I can say that the club is proud of its history, and the clubhouse and bar although old, can be fantastic. The course is good but lacking the ooph factor to make it really good.

I have been invited to play there about 6 or 7 times, and have accepted every invite, even when it meant changing my diary around to accommodate it.

Whilst not an overly long course, it is a thinkers course, don't just pull the driver out and whack it on every hole or you will pay the price, this course is all about shot placement vs pin placement - so some local knowledge never goes amiss. When you pull the driver out and do stay on the fairway, you will be well rewarded for good drives.

I concur with johnfish see his review below as an outsider coming to this course (as the guest of a member) the staff and management make you feel quite unwelcome. The only real negative. But then it is very difficult not to be jealous of the members, as a member only course, it is possible to have the whole course to yourself (or at least it often feels like that).

I have played Brisbane a few times now - usually as part of the QGU's Country Golf week - held during the Brisbane Exhibition week in August every year.

This year we had the fortune (same would say "misfortune") of playing the 27 hole Foursomes (2 players - alternate shot) here.

I have played many, many courses in Queensland and have been fortunate enough to visit Melbournes sandbelt golf courses and when we played here last week I believe the greens were possibly the closest thing to Tour speed greens I have putted on. At this time of year the greens appear to be oversown with rye - and are brilliant.

I am a big fan of old style golf courses (shorter tight layouts) that do not require you to hit 280 metre drives to play the course (because I have not now or will never have those shots). The emphasis you will learn very quickly when playing here is to keep it in the fairway (hit a fair few long irons off the tees), get in on the green in the right position and use your course management skills.

I would love to get on this course and play some matchplay events, as it is a course that sets up great for amatuer golf under that format.

An absolute joy to play, and a course where you can take a junior golfer showing some promise to let them learn some course management skills (providing you can get on).

I would happily play golf here for the rest of my living days (just send the membership form now).

Some golf courses have a great feel to them the second you walk in the place. This course does not. In fact as an outsider coming to this course the staff and management make you feel quite unwelcome. For example, you are only allowed to wear white socks or socks with your own courses logo. Naturally enough the pro shop does an excellent trade in plain white socks!

Forgiving that point, this course is a cracker! Well maintained and manicured greens, challenging holes (5 is a beauty) and 3 extra champioship holes that are worth the obvious expense the club went to.

Hit your driver well and scoring low is not out of the question. Having a local with you to tell you when to lay back and hit an iron would also be a big advantage.

I have had the chance to access and play this course with my social club Teamfore and it's was a fantastic experience.

BCG is one of the oldest course in the Brisbane region and is a members only club.

I live nearby and had been driving past the course daily for a few years, even before I took up golf and always wonderful what lay beyond the verdant fences.

The course itself is fanstastic and has great fairways and suberb conditions all round. Interesting holes and some truly great challenges holes are here and you can check some of these out via their websites Pro guide to the layout.

It's a shame that social booking aren't allowed however they host conference and other special days so convince your social club this week to try and arrange a game there as you won't be disappointed.

The proshop is well stocked with very friendly staff. There resident pro is the recommended local fitter for Ping products and you don't have to be a member to take advantage of his skills in fitting and private lessons.

Overall one of those hidden gem courses that not everyone will get to play, but shouldn't be missed if the chance arrives.
