Bounded by water on three sides, the spectacular Tasmania Golf Club course is set on the picturesque Barilla Bluff, where it has been since 1971. Narrow tree-lined fairways are augmented by superb panoramic views with large rolling greens and strategically placed green-side bunkers. The course was created by curator Ian Grimsey under the guidance of noted course architect, Mr. Al Howard. The feature hole of the course is the par 5, 3rd hole. From the championship markers it is awe inspiring and has been more than favourably compared to the notorious 18th hole at California’s Pebble Beach layout.

Played March 2010 in beeeyutiful weather. Just one of those magnificent days. The course IS fantastic. Not overly long but the gap between fairway and reload is quite small so driving is a premium. Fantastically presented, the green can only be described as "magnificent" – honestly. There were all consistent, true and really well kept – top marks to the greens staff. There are brilliant views over the water and back up the 9th to the clubhouse is photo-worthy. Well worth the $$.

Played December 6 2009 in terrific weather conditions.

After having played Launceston, Barnbougle, Royal Hobart and then this in successive days, and having read some average reviews, i wasn’t expecting that much. But I thought Tasmania was an excellent golf course. I think changes of elevation are excellent in a golf course, make you think and adapt, and Tasmaina has plenty of those. Has some really interesting holes and some visual delights.

I’m not sure if its worth the green fee ($99 plus cart, but you can play The Dunes for $45??) but is certainly worth the game if you can get over that.

Are these the best greens in Australia ?

I am a member at The National in Victoria and have played most of the great courses in Australia and a healthy number overseas. Take it from someone who’s been around, these greens are fast, true and consistent.

The fairways are tight, maybe too tight for the average golfer, but that makes you think before you just blast away. The course is long – the card says just 6,212 but it plays longer. I hit a 5 iron about 170m in Melbourne but only about 160m here – I guess the cold air hurts it a bit.

Rough is a bit patchy but it is called rough. Bunkers are hard, but consistent, it is winter and they seemed a bit damp. That said, the locals told me that a lot of other courses in the area have ponds instead of bunkers at the moment so nothing to worry about at Tasmania.

Course layout is a cracker. Some awesome holes – like the par 3 5th, 197m uphill, the 548m 16th with a target area for your second shot that looks about 6 feet wide and the 17th, a dog leg par 4 with an uphill drive, hazard right, hazard left and a big depression before the green.

Seriously, don’t miss this one. $99 looks like a steep green fee but it was worth every cent. I’m definitely going back.

PROS

  • Greens
  • Course Layout
  • Value for money

Cons

  • Super tight fairways

im not the worlds greatest golfer but even I was bitterly disapointed with this course, the fairways were practically dead, im not sure why but does it matter when you pay that much for a round? I realise its been dry but this was rediculous, other courses in hobart are still green!! If this is one of tasmanias best then tasmanian golf is in trouble. best play elsewhere….Royal awesome, unbelieveble condition hard to believe there is only 1km between the 2 courses, Kingston Beach really nice course, north west bay was in fantastic nick, barnbougle in a different league to all of them. terrible! one star for the views

I played Melb Cup Day 08, I thought this was a fabulous course, tight and demanding, with probably some of the best greens I have ever played on. Very true. Club Championships were on which may explain the difference in my opinion to others playing at different times of the year but I did not get a bad roll.

As far as best holes, I think outside of the postcard 3rd, that the Par 3’s were a great test (except for the 18th which was an immense disappointment) with the short Par 4’s (1st and 15th) also notable.

It is a pity that the course finishes on what is its most disappointing hole, almost an afterthought uphill Par 3 but overall, especially considering the magnificent views, I think this is a course that has to be played in Hobart.

Just a word of warning, the back nine is quite a walk with 12/13/14 back and legbreaking, just be ready for the pain !!!.

A very nice course which demands respect and thought.

Blasting away with the driver will get you in plenty of trouble here, so it is wise to think about where to place your ball so that you dont end up in the poo.

Best hole is there signature hole the 3rd. A shortish Par 5 with a drive over the bay. Place your ball in the fairway and you have a short shot in for 2, get left and wide and you are in double bogey town.

If you are down south, play it at least twice

Played on New Year's Day 07.

The frustration with this golf course continues! I've played it now about four or five times whilst visiting Tassie and each time I leave thinking what an excellent course it COULD BE with just some minor work. It's definitely top 5 within the state, behind Barnbougle Dunes and Royal Hobart, but is in the mix for bronze with Ulverstone and Launceston GC's.

The course has a brilliant position on the Barilla bluff as it is surrounded by the bay and the course layout takes advantage of that. It's only about 20mins east of Hobart, out near the airport and is easy to find and easy to get a game on if you give the pro shop a call a couple of days ahead. Over the Xmas break I've never had a problem getting on and am often suprised at how few people are out and about. $60 green fee is fair value and comparable to Royal Hobart.

The course is not in its best condition (I've never seen it perfect, but it's always at least good) and right now it is starting to show signs of suffering on some of the holes. The fairways were dry around the edges and the 13th even had some cracking in the fairway. The lack of rainfall is showing. The wind had been up during the past week and the big eucalypts bordering many of the holes had dropped plenty of branches, sticks and bark everywhere and they were still lying about, in the fairway and even on the greens. This is another one of those little things which if tidied up would do much more for the course.

My favourite holes are the par 5 3rd, which is the much photographed signature for the course (look at the thumbnail at the top of this review page). This hole challenges you to bite off as much of the bay as you can with your drive so don't get distracted. I'll admit to playing my third shot off the tee that day after mixing up my ability and my ambition. I also like the long par 5 16th which runs along the back of the course and is probably the most sheltered and most well conditioned hole on the course. It is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon sunshine, with it's large stands of eucalypts and other trees.

If you're in Hobart, go play it.

This is undoubtly the best golf course in tasmania. This is a very tight course where the driver stays in the bag. Nice lush fairways and hard quick greens, i can now see why matt goggin is on the us tour. Playing on this course would do the worlds of good for your game

This course is no walk in the park.

Physically demanding as the landscape is, the course also requires concentration from start to finish. The only real shame is it's starting and finishing holes, which probably could be swapped with others close to the clubhouse to better round off the course experience.

The third is often raved about, a par 5 that skirts the bay and offers a risk/reward tee shot. I quite liked the 16th, another par 5, which cambers gently downhill through natural bushland and requires three accurate and well-struck shots. Both holes have differing natural beauty and a test for the keen golfer.

The eleventh is a nice short hole, downhill with a short iron and a vista out into the bay.

The "finish" quality of the course - the green surrounds, the tees and some of the bunker edging - is perhaps a level down from the top mainland courses, and I think some areas suffer from the foliage not allowing good grass growth, particularly in winter.

The first is a steep downhill par 4, with the green out of sight yet driveable for the longer hitters. I found it a little disconcerting that the first experience of the course might be hitting someone or being hit.

The eighteenth is an uphill par 3, which is a nice hole but I think a finish that doesn't really complement the course.

The ninth would serve as a better finish, and the tenth a better start than the first.

Nonetheless a course I'd go back to, with a better idea of what clubs to hit and which way some of the greens (which when I played were a tad slow) borrow.
