TaylorMade Burner 460 (Drivers)

TaylorMade’s Burner 460, with it’s SuperFast club technology, promotes a faster swing for added drive-crushing power! Bullet shaped clubhead and sleek crown markings provide increased confidence and speed at address while the Inverted Cone Technology and 460cc head size give the 460 Burner a tremendous amount of forgiveness for long, straight results on off-centre hits.

MOI stands for Moment of Inertia, and is calculated using a standardised formula set forth by the USGA. MOI generally relates to a clubhead’s ability to resist twisting on off-centre hits. The more the clubhead twists, the more ball speed is lost, and the shorter the shot.

“Effective MOI” is TaylorMade’s term for a driver’s ability to reduce ball speed loss and promote distance on mis-hits by virtue of both the MOI of the head and the positive effects of Inverted Cone Technology.

Recently got the TM ’09 Burner 9.5 degree, with the Re-Ax 48 stiff shaft. The driver sets up beautifully behind the ball, and while the face is not as high as some drivers, it is wide, so it will benefit those who have issues with strikes more across the clubface, rather than vertical issues.

The club is not short at 46.25 inches, so the sightly extra length may take a little getting used to if stepping up from a shorter driver.

Having said that though, this club is very easy to swing, and provides a deep thud when contact is made. It offers forgiveness across the face, and very good distance for any miss hits.

I have found that not only can I draw this club easier than my last driver, but also that my occasional big fade has now been reduced to a small fade. The trajectory off the clubface itself with my swing (9.5 degree) is mid height, neither too low to lose distance, or too high to become blown about by the wind.

One thing you really want in a driver is to feel the ball compressing against the clubface as you hit it, and this combination of club and Re Ax shaft provide all the feedback you could ever need.

This is the driver for opening the shoulders and letting it rip, as it’s very forgiving and provides plenty of feel.

For the best feature of the TM’09 burner now and yes ….. it is very long. The length of the club itself does help in really getting them out there, but it just inspires confidence which is the key to longer drives.

I won’t say the technology within this driver itself will add metres to your drives, (as everyone says that about their driver purchase) but the confidence it will inspire within you should see you absolutely bombing it, and still smiling as you slip this club back into your bag.

Once you get this driver tuned into your swing, you know you won’t be too wide, so you can give it a real rip, and that sums up the driver really, confidence inspiring, and very very long.

Bought the 2009 Burner last XMas and have experienced a renewed love of driving which had died as I stumbled through a series of the over priced and over rated. The Burner is reasonably priced too and goes a mile even with slightly off center hits. It has saved many a round of golf which has increase my appetite for more.

I will have to be thoroughly convinced that a better driver than this exists out there. It has transformed my game by helping me find more fairways. It consistently rewards my imperfect swing with decent results – and when hit dead centre with good rythym, will punch out over 300 easily. I cant wait to find a better driver than this – cos I will buy it tomorrow, although I reckon my money is safe for the time being.

Just bought 9.5deg driver, much longer and easier to hit than my Titleist 905R. Looking forward to buying 3wood and hybrid next.

Believe what they say about this club – I have had them all (TM’s) and the burner which I’ve now had for 2 weeks and 3 games is outstanding.. my mate, who is very consistent off the tee, hit his driver then hit my Burner and outdrove himself 20 meters – light and looks great at address – I play a 9.5 and stiff shaft on the drivers, my swing speed is 94 mph!The Burner is 1 degree closed. They finish making them this month (August 08) so prices are dropping! Can’t imagine what the next release will do!

Bought this driver a few months back and havent looked back since then. Its very very forgiving and so easy to hit a nice draw with, the lighter shaft and head makes it pick up light and you can really swing it swiftly without feeling your trying to crush it.

Its one degree closed in the 9.5 degree that can never hurt most of us. Agree with above post that if you like a 10.5 degree get a 9.5 degree as closed face does increase loft a bit.

Sound is good and feeling is amazing as you watch it fly thinking geez i didnt really try to hit it that hard

Awesome driver. Bought it a few weeks ago and it really lives up to its promise. With the driver I’ve been hitting the ball a lot more consistently and it does carry an extra 10-20 metres. I really didn’t expect it to make such a noticeable difference.

PROS

  • More consistent shots
  • More distance

Cons

  • Driver cover is a bit tight

This is a great driver which has given me much more consistency off the tee (replaces Burner Mid Size c1990). Suits my game very well. Am now able to aim down the right side and know it won’t fade/slice. It is also long with excellent flight. I am using the 10.5 with regular shaft. Highly recommended.

I’ve had my Burner now for six months and find it to be the best driver I have ever owned. I took a little while to get used to it but the effort was worth it. It has given me back the distance I had when I was younger and it is much easier than my previous drivers to keep on the short grass. Simply put, If you are looking for a new driver make sure that you give the Burner a try before you make your decision. You will be glad you did!

A great looking club looking more like a 3 wood despite its deep face. Very easy to hit with confidence and it does go a mile. The standard REAX shaft hits the ball higher so if you normally use a 10.5 get a 9.5. Shaft is 1” longer than most. Very well made with off-centre hits still going as far as they did with my old club but get one off the middle or slightly higher and you are bombing away. Don’t be afraid to hit it!
