TaylorMade r7 425 (Drivers)

TaylorMade | Drivers | User Rating: Rate-5 (5.0) | Add A Review

TaylorMade Golf has introduced the r7 425, an addition to the r7 family of drivers that includes the original r7 quad, the r7 quad TP and the r7 quad ht. Like those drivers, the 425 employs TaylorMade’s revolutionary Movable Weight technology.

The r7 425 features 28 grams of movable weight divided between two widely spaced TaylorMade Launch Control (TLC) ports, allowing for a lateral shift in CG position of up to 5 millimetres. Robot testing indicates that the 425 delivers a lateral trajectory change of up to 13 yards when the TLC cartridges are configured to promote the maximum amount of either draw or fade. Likewise, players can configure the TLC cartridges to increase or decrease their spin-rate to promote changes in the height of their tee shots, either higher or lower. After a trajectory is chosen, the 425 makes it easier to achieve that trajectory over and over, thanks in part to the club’s exceptionally high MOI and its large 425cc head.

Compared to the original r7 quad, the 425 promotes a wider change in trajectory in terms of both height and lateral movement; it’s more forgiving; and visually encourages greater confidence.

The r7 425 incorporates four TLC ports, and includes four TLC cartridges: two 2-gram and two 12-gram. By inserting the cartridges into the TLC ports in different configurations, players can change the CG location to promote a broad range of launch conditions.

Compared to the r7 quad, the r7 425 is set up to promote a higher trajectory when the cartridges are configured to deliver a high and neutral ball flight. And because the 425’s TLC ports are spaced wider apart, it promotes significantly more draw when the cartridges are configured to promote more draw, and slightly more draw when the cartridges are configured to promote a draw.

The r7 425 is available in 8.5°, 9.5°, 10.5° and 11.5° lofts, and in X, S and R shaft flexes.

I have user a R7 425 for around a year now. It is 9.5 degrees and I use an aldida Shaft. I am able to outdrive most playing partners, although on bad swings it will behave accordingly (Not the club’s fault!!). The weights are something I changed a bit in the first few months after purchase, but since then I have not changed from my favoured setup.

I like the club and have not looked to replace at any stage.

PROS

  • Long
  • Weights can produce differing results

Love the TaylorMade Quads. I have the 400 & 425 TP models and can’t make up my mind which is the best. The 400 is 10.5 degrees with the Mitsubishi shaft and the 425 has 9.5 degrees and the standard TP shaft with Rombax Technology. They are not a miracle club that has led to straight long drives every time I swing them, but I have become a lot more consistant since I have had them. I think this is due to the fact that the faces set up very square at address and make them very easy to aim. I have tried the Callaway 460 and hate the way the face seems to be very curved at address. I think this also creates more of a slice with off centre (towards the toe) hits. Just my opinion from experience. Moving heavier weights to the front definitely makes a big difference to ball trajectory (height) but moving them to try and create a fade or draw does not seem to have a huge difference. Eg: you still need to be able to square the face at impact, the club will not automatically do it for you. The best thing about the weights are that you can dramatically change the swing weight to suit your swing very easily, just experiment until it feels good and you are maximising your distance.
