Callaway FT-iQ (Drivers)

FT-iQ is the result of a multi-year, multi-million dollar program undertaken by Callaway Golf’s world-renowned Research and Development team.

Pushing multi-material Fusion Technology beyond previously held limits, the FT-iQ melds several cutting edge components into a sleek shape inspired by stealth jets and futuristic concept cars. Callaway Golf’s designers believe it is the smartest, most advanced driver in the world.

FT-iQ incorporates “Complete Inertial Design,” a Callaway Golf design principle that factors all of the club’s characteristics – Moment of Inertia (MOI), Center of Gravity (CG), CG bias, face design, loft and lie – to optimize the club’s overall performance.

FT-iQ is available in men’s and women’s versions in both standard and Tour models. The standard models feature 9, 10, 11, and 13 (HT) degree lofts. The 10 and 11 degree models are available in left-handed versions.

The Tour version has a slightly more open face, and is available in 8.5 and 9.5 degree lofts; the latter is also available in a left-handed version.

FT-iQ will be available internationally on October 15 and in the United States and Canada on November 15. In the U.S., FT-iQ will have a suggested retail price of US$625.

I am a high handicapper when I don’t get the chance to play often. When I play weekly it gets down to mid teens. I used to use a Nike Ignite 450 9’ and hit fairly long, not terribly accurate. I was lucky enough to get the last new 9’stiff flex at demo pricing ($150!) of the FTiQ and have come to love it. I had trouble at first, think I was trying too hard, but have now started to get used to being on the fairway more often than not. It is probably 10 to 15 mtrs shorter than the R11, but I find it still gets out over 300 and thats plenty, especially if it’s straight. ;) I use less effort now and have developed a more regular swing too.
Well worth it if you pick up a good one.

As a high handicapper who plays with a social club on different courses every 2 weeks I was really struggling to get decent drives away. My wife bought me a tour version 10 deg with imix regular shaft. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I have been using it now for 6 months so around 10 rounds of golf, my drives are longer, and definately straighter, I can get a slight fade to the right by opening the head a mm but I can’t get this culb to hook left at all. It just goes where I shoot it over 90% of the time and I know the other 10% is my fault, not the clubs. After all there hasn’t been a club invented that can cure a bad shot.
I definately would recommend this club to any golfer who suffers from slices and hooks.

Been using the FT-iQ for a few months now, and am thoroughly enjoying the accuracy and confidence. My previous driver was the 2008 Cleveland Launcher XLS (damn loud) which gets me slightly longer distance but with much more shot dispersion…and it was non-conforming…
While addressing over the ball, the FT-iQ inspires confidence. You can shape your shots, but the occurence of big slices and hooks are all but history. Highly recommended for those seeking accuracy from their driver.

PROS

  • Goes straight
  • Penetrating flight
  • Inspires confidence
  • Smaller shot dispersion

Cons

  • Odd shape which may put some people off
  • May not be as long as some other drivers

I’ve used a TM R5 Dual for the last 5 years and have been pretty happy with it, but I decided I wasn’t hitting enough fairways and something straighter would be a good idea. Not really looking for extra distance, but then who can resist a few extra meters?
All the mag reviews seemed to reckon the FTiq was "straighter" than anything else, so I picked one up – 9.0 degrees with a stiff shaft. Worked well on the launch monitor, but a morning at the DR told a different story. I felt like I was trying to hit the ball with a pergola post! Fortunately I was able to swap out the stiff for a regular; it only takes a minute with the screw-down locking system.

Now it’s waaayy better. Excellent distance, very straight, and slight misshits are still quite acceptable. Because it’s more reliable you can try to give the ball a bit extra but still with a degree of safety. It’ll probably still be on the fairway and if you manage to nail it it will be very long.

The technology makes sense, and this club does actually do what Callaway say it will do. It’s long, straight and forgiving. Top marks.

9.5 Tour with the actual 63 Fubuki ( reps menttioned that the regular version has a lower model Fubuki in it). 1* open is great for dog legs and workability. But when you need to go down the chute, it does just that. Different , but likeable sound at impact and heavier feeling than most other Drivers I have tested.
