James Nitties has earned his place on the honour roll of New Zealand amateur golf with a hard fought victory over Hamish Robertson in today's final of the 2003 New Zealand Amateur Championship.

Nitties was behind early but took the lead in the second nine of the morning round. He went to lunch at three up over Taihape's Robertson was determined not to let the occasion get the better of him and, with just five holes to go in the 36-hole final, he took the match back to level pegging. All that hard work was to no avail however, as Nitties won the 32nd and 33rd holes to go two ahead and when he had parred the 34th for another win, the match was all over.

The margin in the end was three and two but it will be remembered as one of the better finals in recent years.
