Queenslander Stuart Bouvier has joined Jens Nilsson in the lead after the first round of the Schweppes SA PGA Championship at The Vines Golf Club in Adelaide.
A previous winner of this Championship, Bouvier scorched around the front nine, starting with an eagle 3 at the first, and followed up with birdies at 2,4,5 and 8 to turn in 30.
His bogey free round then included further birdies at 15 and 16 and finished his day with a great birdie at the tough 430 metre par four eighteenth.
He matched Nilsson's blistering morning round and claimed a share of the new course record, and the pair take a two shot lead into the second round.
David Gleeson fresh from a stint in Asia and Korea, displayed his ample talent with superb 64, firing five birdies and an eagle. He is one shot clear of local favourite Adrian Percey, who normally brings his best game to this event, and big hitting Victorian Marcus Fraser
Another local Justin Cooper, who celebrated the birth of his first child on Monday, showed a welcome return to form to be well placed with a 66.
Ideal conditions prevailed all day, providing players with the opportunity to shoot some low numbers. With the perfect weather expected to continue through the week, and a strong 158 player field, a record four round score could be there for the taking.
Spectators were impressed by the display of some outstanding young professionals, with Martin Joyce, Wade Ormsby and Nigel Spence all returning five under par scores of 66, and kept in touch with the leaders.
The second round promises plenty of action, with a two round under par score probably required just to make the halfway cut.
