Tickets for 2004 PGA Championship almost sold out

Tickets to the 2004 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits continue to sell at an unprecedented pace, breaking numerous PGA Championship ticket sale records in the process. Weekly passes and a limited number of practice round tickets remain, but all daily tickets to the four Championship rounds are no longer available. The PGA Championship will be held August 9-15, 2004 at Whistling Straits.

"Even though the state of Wisconsin has an excellent reputation for supporting sporting events, we had no idea that the level of interest in the PGA Championship would be this great," said Barry Deach, tournament director for the 2004 PGA Championship. "Though we've received ticket orders from all over the world, including from all 50 states, more than 80 percent of orders have come from the state of Wisconsin. We've also smashed all previous PGA Championship records for volunteer applications, with nearly 8,000 individuals requesting to work the Championship."

For those without tickets still interested in seeing the world's best golfers compete for the coveted Wanamaker Trophy, all is not lost.

Two types of weekly passes are available - The Wanamaker Season Pass and the Season Pass. Both ticket types provide access to all seven days of the PGA Championship with seven individual daily tickets. The Wanamaker Season Pass also includes access to the Wanamaker Club, an air-conditioned, 100,000 square foot venue with food and beverage offerings, and televisions galore. It is being billed as Wisconsin's largest sports bar.

"We want to ensure people understand that they can split season passes by day among family and friends," said Deach. "That way individuals with commitments on a certain day can give that daily ticket away to an acquaintance. The only remaining way to see the final round on Sunday, where history will be made, is through a season pass." The Wanamaker season pass is US$375, and the season pass is US$275.

A very small number of practice round tickets remain, which promise to be perhaps the most entertaining days at the Championship for golf and sports enthusiasts alike.

"Many of the pros will be playing the Straits course for the first time, and they will use these rounds to experiment with the pure elements of the course, including the wind and actual layout," said Deach. "They will want to get in as many practice rounds as possible, under as many conditions as possible, so spectators who attend on these days will see golfers experimenting with shots not usually seen during the Championship. Practice rounds are the only time when players are readily available up close for autographs and photos, as cameras are not allowed during the Championship rounds."

Typically, the PGA of America sells the most Championship tickets in the summer months, when interest in golf peaks. "The weeks of leading up to and immediately after the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship usually create the biggest push for tickets," said Deach. "This is also the time when thousands of volunteers not selected to work the 2004 PGA Championship will be able to purchase a ticket, which will further decrease the remaining supply of tickets. We urge golf fans interested in purchasing tickets to the 2004 PGA Championship to act now."

Tickets may be purchased on-line at www.pga2004.com.

The 86th PGA Championship will be played Aug. 9-15, 2004 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.
