German Tobias Dier set a course record with a -10 (60) in the first round of the TNT Open. Dier fired off 10 birdies and also came within a metre of shooting the first ever 59 on the European Tour when his eagle putt on the final hole came up short. Dier’s opening round gives him a five stroke lead over his nearest rivals, David Gilford, Ronan Rafferty, Raymond Russell and Chris Van der Velde.
Defending champion Bernhard Langer bogeyed the 18th to finish the round at 1 (71) while John Daly, who had to take the drastic measure of supergluing his hand together after finding a piece of glass in it at the British Open, carded a solid Even Par of 70.
Jarrod Moseley leads the ANZ players with an opening round of -4 (66) and closed in a tie for 6th place. Peter Lonard, who has chosen to stay in Europe this week after the British Open, is another shot back after carding a -3 (67). Lonard has earnt over AUD$1 million so far this year on the US circuit and his recent result in the British Open and again today shows that he can easily adapt to different courses.
Stephen Leaney (T19), Lucas Parsons (T43), Scott Gardiner (T43) and Greg Turner (T65) were the only other Australasians to shoot Par or better.
