Mike Heinen fired an -8 (63) to take a one stroke lead after the opening round of the John Deere Classic. In a week where most of the big name players are taking the week off, the less well-known players get a chance make a name for themselves with a good finish.
Fred Funk closed with a -7 (64) to take outright second place, with defending champion David Gossett, Robert Gamez and Tripp Isenhour are two shots back after opening with -6 (65). The winner of last week’s BC Open, Spike McRoy, sits in equal 6th at -5.
Kiwi Michael Long heads the Australasian attack at -5 and in a twelve-way tie for 6th place. Bradley Hughes and John Senden are next best at -3 (T27) and are the only other ANZ players to have broken Par in the first round.
Grant Waite, Rod Pampling, Mathew Goggin and Steve Allan closed at 1 and in equal 108th. Wayne Grady finished with 2 (T125) and Paul Gow 3 (T136) after finishing last week’s BC Open in equal 9th.
