32-year-old US based Australian, Mark Hensby, today won his third event on the Nationwide Tour and his first since 2000, when he birdied the first hole of a playoff with Zach Johnson to win the 2003 Henrico County Open.
Hensby had chances last year to regain his PGA Tour card that he had gained in 2001 by virtue of finishing second on the 2000 Buy.Com Tour moneylist. He was unable to finish the year off however, but his victory this week now has him in 13th place on the 2003 money list and with twenty players now getting their cards at season's end, he is on track to head back to the USPGA Tour in 2004.
Hensby produced a whirlwind finish to the event playing his last 24 holes in fourteen under as he finished off round three with an eagle and three birdies and then today fired a nine under 63 to catch Johnson and then beat him at the first extra hole.
Hensby moved to the US from Melbourne in the early 90's and played mini-tours until joining the Buy.Com Tour in 1997. The $US81,000 he earned today is his largest career paycheque.
