Strongest field of the year for the 85th PGA Championship

IN: News | US PGA | US PGA Championship (2003) | General | 07 Aug 2003

Defending champion Rich Beem will be joined by twelve past champions in heading the year's strongest field at the 85th PGA Championship, Aug. 14-17, at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y. The 156-player field currently features 98 of the top 100 world ranked players, which matches the 2002 PGA field for the most world ranked players in history.

The PGA Championship returns to Oak Hill Country Club for the first time since 1980 when Jack Nicklaus recorded a record-tying fifth PGA title to match Rochester native Walter Hagen. The field also features 60 international players representing 18 countries, 30 players who have combined to win 57 major championships and the 25 low scorers in the 2003 PGA Club Professional Championship.

Joining Beem, who rallied a year ago for his first major title, are past champions Paul Azinger (1993), Mark Brooks (1996), John Daly (1991), Davis Love III (1997), Larry Nelson (1981, '87), Nick Price (1992, '94), Vijay Singh (1998), Jeff Sluman (1988), Hal Sutton (1983), David Toms (2001), Bob Tway (1986) and Tiger Woods (1999-2000).

The 156-player field's final berth is reserved for the winner of The International, which concludes this Sunday.

Founded in 1916, The PGA of America is a not-for-profit organization composed of more than 28,000 men and women professionals who are dedicated to growing participation in the game of golf.
