Round one of the 2003 US Amateur Championship has been completed at two venues in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, with Ben Bunny from the Southern Golf Club in Melbourne leading the Australians. The famed Oakmont Golf Club and the adjacent Pittsburg Field Golf Club are the courses being used in the qualifying stage.

Bunny opened with a first round 68 at the Pittsburg Field Golf Club where most of the good scoring came. He had the third best score of the day at that venue behind Ryan Moore of Washington who fired at first round 65, again at Pittsburg Field.

The best round at the more demanding Oakmont was 69 by Steve Conway of Texas.

Other Australians were not quite as successful were Nick Flanagan, a 74 at Oakmont and Kurt Barnes a 75 at the same course.

The qualifying is over 36 holes with the top 64 advancing to the matchplay phase.
