Reno Tahoe an opportunity for many to make a move
BY iseekgolf.com | US PGA Tour | 2003 Reno-Tahoe Open | Preview | 20 Aug 2003
With so many of the leading players in Akron Ohio this week for the WGC NEC event, the Reno Tahoe Open offers opportunity for many but more especially for those struggling for position on this year’s money list.
Played at the Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno, Nevada, the event carries a purse of $US3,000,000 with Chris Riley the 2002 winner. Riley has bigger fish to fry elsewhere however and so the favouritism for the event will be left to the likes of Scott McCarron, Steve Lowery, Tim Herron, Kevin Sutherland and perhaps our own Rod Pampling. Pampling was 17th last year and in his current solid form, this offers a good chance for his first PGA Tour win.
It will also see the participation of two leading amateurs recently turned pro in Ricky Barnes and Nick Watney. Watney last week won in Canada in just his fifth start in professional golf after a fine collegiate career.
The Montreux Country Club is a Jack Nicklaus designed course built in 1997 and has played host to this event since 1999. Other winners have included John Cook, Scott Verplank and Notah Begay.
Australasians entered are Steve Alker, Greg Chalmers, Gavin Coles, Mathew Goggin, Paul Gow, Anthony Painter, Rod Pampling, Craig Perks, John Senden and Grant Waite.
