Rod Pampling, who seems to have found the secret in recent weeks, has produced his best finish on the USPGA Tour with his tie for third place finish at the Reno Tahoe Open this morning.
After a run of missed cuts through May and June, mainly as a result of having his clubs stolen, the 33-year-old bounced back with a fourth place at the BC Open and then followed good finishes in Hartford and Colorado before his 14th at the PGA last week, when the leading Australian.
Yet another of the Gary Edwin coached team, Pampling is in his second season on the PGA Tour and he has already surpassed last year’s earnings by quite some way. This placing and the resultant $US174,000, will take his earnings beyond $US1,000,000 with still several lucrative events to go. He has now found a level of consistency that will yield him a lot more money before season’s end. Pampling’s previous best finish had been his fourth place at the BC Open, and at last year’s Tampa Bay Classic.
He finished tied for third here with Dennis Paulson some four shots behind the winner Kirk Triplett and just one behind second placed Tim Herron.
Triplett roared past Craig Barlow, Herron, Pampling and Paulson with a last round 63 that saw him win just his second event on tour. He has been a prolific money winner previously however and eight times second, so good to see him finally get across the line again.
Paul Gow and Grant Waite were the next best Australasians behind Pampling sharing 27th, John Senden was 47th, Gavin Coles was 68th, Mathew Goggin 73rd, Steve Alker 74th and Anthony Painter 77th.
