2003 Victorian Open cancelled

The Victorian Open, one of Australia's longest running and prestigious major golf tournaments may have been played for the last time.

The Victorian Golf Association announced on Thursday September 11th that the Open had been cancelled for 2003. It had been scheduled to run at Portsea and Sorrento Golf Clubs during late October as part of the PGA Von Nida Tour. The VGA has been unable to attract the level of sponsorship support needed to stage the event.

VGA President, Mr. Dick Kirby said "This is a most disappointing announcement to make. The Vic Open has a long history of outstanding contribution to golf and has a proud tradition of nurturing many young players through amateur careers to their current status as some of Australia's leading international players. It has been an important event which is intertwined with the promotion of golf as a leading participant sport in this State."

"The circumstances for funding major professional golf tournaments have changed over recent years. VGA has turned every possible stone to save the Open and Victorian club golfers have directly contributed significant funds into the event for almost a decade. Unfortunately, changed sponsorship priorities for major companies together with the impact of new events brought into Victoria with direct government funding support have left us with no where to go."
