The Links Group, developers of the Sandhurst Club and Sanctuary Lakes Resort, is pleased to announce that the hottest new property in Australian golf has his sights set on a unique double in the 2003 Links Group Victorian PGA Championship.
Marcus Fraser ‘s win in the 1999 Victorian Amateur Championship came as somewhat of a surprise. But he’ll start a hot favourite when the field hits off in the 2003 Links Group Victorian PGA Championship at Kew Golf Club from October 9 to 12.
Fraser, now 25 and in his rookie season as a professional, has won four titles in the past six months – once on the Von Nida Tour, twice on Europe ‘s Challenge Tour and made the big breakthrough with a maiden victory on the lucrative European Tour. His win in the BMW Russian Open makes him fully exempt on the 2004 European Tour where he’ll take on the likes of Ernie Els, Paddy Harrington, Thomas Bjorn and co.
Fraser previously stamped his class by winning the individual title in the 2002 world amateur championship, the Eisenhower Trophy. Fraser, from Corowa, is the only player managed by Frank Williams, the man who guided Greg Norman’s off-course career.
Other likely challengers for the PGA title include defending champion Craig Carmichael, NSW PGA winner Chris Downes, who lies tenth on the Australasian order of merit with $141,000 in prizemoney, and Steven Collins, who led the Australian Masters at the halfway mark last summer before being overhauled by Peter Lonard and Adam Scott.
