The Executive Director of the Australian Golf Union, Colin Phillips, announced at Moonah Links today that a number of high-quality Australians had already submitted entries for this year’s Australian Open presented by Hillross Financial.
“Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby, Aaron Baddeley, Stephen Leaney, Peter Lonard, Geoff Ogilvy, Peter O’Malley, Craig Parry, and John Senden, together with US Amateur champion Nick Flanagan, and the defending Australian Open champion Steve Allan will all play.
“There was a time when the success or otherwise of an Australian tournament was largely dependent on whether or not one man turned up, but that’s simply not the case any more. And perhaps the developmental influence of that one man is as much responsible as anything else for the talent we now have on show in Australian golf.”
“Look, we’re planning to add some international flavour to that list of names, but having said that, I think it would be insulting to the players I just mentioned to suggest that the quality of the field is not already outstanding. But again, we’ll be doing all we can to make it even better.”
“I think it’s worth making the point though, that we’re lucky in Australia to have a number of players who play some really attractive golf. Allenby’s stroke play is simply magnificent, whilst Appleby and Lonard have that destructive ability to really tear a course apart. Baddeley is another who’s capable of anything, but all of those players I mentioned earlier are excellent in their own right.”
“The public will also have an opportunity to see Stephen Leaney after his runner-up performance at the US Open, and many people will be getting their first look at Nick Flanagan. His win in the US Amateur has really served to underline his potential, and now he’ll have a chance to perform in his own national championship.”
Mr Phillips also announced today that the prize money for the 2003 Australian Open presented by Hillross Financial will be $1.5 million – the same amount as was on offer in 2002.
The 2003 Australian Open presented by Hillross Financial will be played from 18-21 December at Moonah Links, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. The Australian Golf Union is a partner in the Moonah development with the Open Course having been purpose-built by Thomson Wolveridge & Perrett to host the Australian Open. The 2003 championship will be Moonah’s debut event.
