A final field of 156, including 21 qualifiers, will be at Ipswich Golf Club on Thursday for the 2003 Q.L.D. Group Queensland Open Championship.
The qualifiers, who include 11 amateurs, were decided in tightly contested 18 hole rounds today (Monday) at Virginia and Pacific Golf Clubs.
At Virginia, Caboolture amateur Ben Lammi and journeyman professional, Don Fardon shot five under par 67s to lead home a big field in which only two shots separated the 11 to go forward.
Virginia amateur Henry Epstein shot a three under 69 to lead the qualifiers at Pacific where the top ten went down to 74.
He was only a shot ahead of another amateur, Nathan Uebergang from Indooroopilly.
Indooroopilly will also have Andrew Suosaari and David Lee in the final field.
Holidaying Scottish amateur, Lee Harper, from The Musselburgh Club, was one of the successful qualifiers at Virginia with a 69.
In other news yesterday, young Queensland pro, Craig Jones was a late withdrawal while Matthew Britnell and Peter Martin were included in the field chasing a share of the $100,000 prizemoney and ranking points on the Von Nida Tour.
The Open will begin on Thursday at Ipswich and run through to Sunday.
New professional, Richard Moir, who will make his debut in the pay for play ranks at the Open will be at Ipswich Tuesday afternoon for a practice round. Moir was the leading amateur when the Open was played at Ipswich last year.
