57-year-old West Australian Terry Gale has just the start he was after at the final stage of US Champions Tour qualifying in Florida, when his first round 66 has him one ahead of Mark McNulty, ex-European Ryder Cup captain, Mark James and the Brazilian Rafael Navarro.

Coming off a brilliant European Seniors Tour season, where he won three times including two early season events in the Caribbean, Gale is attempting for the fourth time to get a US Champions Tour card. His season this year was his best since joining the European Seniors Tour in 1996 and this perhaps represents his greatest chance for access to the lucrative Champions Tour.

Sunshine Coast Club pro John Victorsen opened with a one over 73 which has him in 41st place in the field of 110.

Only seven golfers will secure a fully exempt card at the completion of 72 holes with another eight gaining non-exempt status. The cut comes after 36 holes with the top 70 and ties advancing to the final 36.
