Thomas Bjorn today won the Dunlop Phoenix tournament for the second time in five years when he took out the lucrative event in Miyazaki, Japan, by two shots from Daisuke Maruyama.
Bjorn, who won here in 1999 after a playoff against Sergio Garcia, actually trailed Garcia into the last round today by three shots and when he opened with a bogey at his first hole today he fell four behind the Spaniard. Then, however, it all fell apart for Garcia as he completed his front nine in 40. At that point he shared the lead with Bjorn but three bogeys on the way home saw Garcia fall back to eventually finish sixth while Bjorn produced a back nine of 34 for a round of 71 and a four round total of twelve under par 272.
David Gossett, Tetsuji Hiratsuka and 1998 winner Lee Westwood were all tied in third place, one behind Maruyama, with Hank Kuehne alone in 7th.
David Smail and Craig Parry shared Australasian honours in 10th place at 3 under, Brendan Jones was 14th, Steve Conran 33rd and Andre Stolz 55th.
The Japan Tour now heads to Kagoshima for the Casio World Open where David Smail defends his 2002 title.
