The AAMI Women’s Australian Open has found a new home. The 2004 Open will be played at Concord Golf Club in Sydney with AAMI, a key supporter of women’s golf in Australia, extending its naming rights sponsorship of the event for a sixth consecutive year. The event will be held from March 4 – 7, 2004.
AAMI became the naming rights sponsor of the Women’s Australian Open in 1998 and its generous backing of the Women’s Golf Australia event has seen the championship grow in stature significantly in recent seasons. The AAMI Women’s Australian Open became joint-sanctioned by Australian Ladies Professional Golf and the Evian Ladies European Tour in 2000 thereby ensuring the appearance of the best Australian and European-based players each year.
Concord Golf Club will host the AAMI Women’s Australian Open for the first time and has a rich history having been established 104 years ago. It most recently hosted the Australasian Tour’s ANZ Championship in 2001 and also staged the Australian PGA Championship from 1991-93.
Sydney will now provide the backdrop for the AAMI Women’s Australian Open for the second year in a row. Terrey Hills staged the championship this year when Scotland’s Mhairi McKay fired a closing 67 to beat English great Laura Davies by a stroke and claim her maiden professional title. Rachel Teske was the leading Australian finishing in third place two shots behind McKay.
The Minister for Tourism and Sport and Recreation, Sandra Nori today welcomed the return of the tournament to Sydney.
“Having the opportunity to stage such a great event for the second year running, not only cements Sydney’s identity as the sporting capital of Australia, but also acknowledges our community’s strong support for the development of women’s sport,” Ms Nori said.
Its new location at Concord is close to the geographical heart of the city and will continue to be valued by the people of Sydney.
The AAMI Women’s Australian Open’s honour roll boasts some of golf’s most renowned names. Winners over the past decade include Karrie Webb (2000,2002), Annika Sorenstam (1994) and Liselotte Neumann (1995).
