Sophie Gustafson’s bid to become the first female golfer in 58 years to win an event sanctioned by one of the six main tours in world men’s golf came to an end today when she fired a second round 77 at the Casio World Open to miss the cut by seven shots.
Se Ri Pak made the cut in Korea earlier this year but that was in a Korean PGA Tour event, a tour not sanctioned by the World Federation.
Gustafson surprised early on day one at the Casio when she reached two under through nine holes and was sharing the lead at that stage. She would falter on the homeward nine however with a total of 40 to give her an opening round of 74 that had her in 68th place.
Today, an outward nine of 37 was followed by a closing nine of 40 for a 77 and at seven over for the event, she will not be around for the weekend.
The event is currently being led by first round leader Katsumune Imai added a 65 today to be a four shot leader over Indian Jyoti Rhandawa as they enter round three.
