Round one of the 2003 MasterCard Australian Masters is underway in perfect conditions at the Huntingdale course in Melbourne's sandbelt and with just thirty or so players on the course, the soft conditions are already yielding plenty of birdies and indeed eagles. Courtesy of his eagle at the par five 7th, Queenslander Steve Bowditch, at four under has taken a one shot lead over recent New South Wales Open winner Craig Carmichael with Adam Groom one shot further back at two under through seven holes.
Bowditch who has played the Challenge Tour in Europe this year and failed in his attempt to gain access to the European Tour, will enjoy this boost of confidence as he tries to establish his game in the professional ranks.
Among the players favoured to do well this week, Robert Allenby is on the course and is at 1 under through two holes. Geoff Ogilvy and Rod Pampling are also at one under in the early stages of their rounds.
The course is in fine shape especially considering the deluge it suffered in Tuesday night's storm.
