Queenslander Chris Downes has bounced back from the disappointment of missing his USPGA Tour card just a month ago by reaching five under through thirteen holes of his first round of the Australian Open.
Birdies at the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th and 13th have seen him open up a three shot lead over a group of seven players, which includes Andrew Tschudin, Craig Parry, Amercian Ricky Barnes and Peter O’Malley amongst others.
Heavily overcast but relatively calm conditions still prevail at 11:05am. The current outlook is for clearing weather tomorrow and a maximum of 29°C, a late shower and 31°C on Saturday and thunderstorms on Sunday.
Peter Lonard has birdied his tenth hole to get to one under to join the nineteen players currently under par.
