Taiwan's Candie Kung set a new course record after carding a -7 (65) in the first round of the 2002 Weetabix Women's British Open. The 21-year-old Kung takes a one stroke lead into the second round over Karrie Webb, who is looking to win the title for the third time (1995 and 1997). Webb showed signs of returning to the dominating form of a few years ago, with a round that included just 26 putts.
Rachel Teske claimed equal third place and is just two strokes off the lead. Teske shares third place with Elisabeth Esterl, who fired six birdies and one bogey, defending champion Se Ri Pak and American Tina Barrett.
England's Laura Davies, who won last week's Ladies Norwegian Masters, ruined an otherwise solid day after carding a disappointing quadruple bogey on the par five 17th hole to finish with a 2 (74). World number one Annika Sorenstam, carded a 73.
Michelle Ellis carded a -3 (69) to close the day in equal 12th with Shani Waugh and Wendy Doolan another stroke back at -2 and in equal 24th. Other Australasians playing this week include Fiona Pike 50th, Karen Lunn 65th and Joanne Mills 86th at 2 (74).
