Jones leads by one at Buick Open

Kent Jones fired a -7 (65) for a one shot lead after the first round at the 2002 Buick Open. Mark Brooks and Korean K.J. Choi are tied for second place behind Jones, whose best finish on the PGA Tour was a tie for eighth place.
World number one Tiger Woods is back this week following his time off after the recent British Open. He sits in a nine-way tie in fourth place at -5 (67) along with Hal Sutton, Jay Haas and others. Woods' round included five birdies and no bogeys. This is only the fourth time in his career that Woods has played in a tournament the week prior to a major championship and all four tournaments have been the Buick Open.
John Senden leads the way for the sixteen-man Australasian contingent at -4 (68) and in 13th place. Rod Pampling is next best at -3 (69) followed by a trio of players at -2 and in 42nd place. Others players include Frank Nobilo, Stuart Appleby and Phil Tataurangi 61st, Geoff Ogilvy, Craig Parry, Grant Waite and Steve Allan 80th, Robert Allenby 103rd, Paul Gow and Kiwi Michael Long 120th and Bradley Hughes 139th.
