In the first event of the 2004 PGA Tour season, Stuart Appleby won the US$5.3 million Mercedes Championships at The Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii. Appleby's one-stroke victory over Vijay Singh means that the Australian improves four positions to No.11 in the first published Official World Golf Ranking of 2004. Appleby's World Ranking record since the 84 Lumber Classic in September 2003 reads T2, T2, 1, T12, 27, T11, 1 and in that period he has risen from being the fifth highest-ranked Australian at World No.46 to being the top-ranked Australian golfer at World No.11.

2003 PGA Tour money winner Vijay Singh finished outright runner-up in Hawaii and he improves his World Ranking average to 9.95 - the highest of the Fijian's career. Singh's 9.95 points average is just 4.22 behind Tiger Woods who this week celebrates his 231st consecutive week in the World No.1 position.
