Queensland’s Gavin Flint added the Volkswagen NSW Amateur Championship to the Queensland and Victorian titles he currently holds at Royal Sydney Golf Club.
Flint rocketed to the front early with a birdie on the first hole. Consecutive birdies on six, seven and eight and a conceded hole by Brown on nine saw him jump to a four hole advantage after only nine holes.
This lead was extended to eight holes by the conclusion of the first 18 holes. Flint made some miraculous up and downs from seemingly impossible positions and Brown must have wondered what he had to do to cut the deficit.
During the meal break he composed himself and came out will all guns blazing. He posted birdies on three of the first four holes to reduce the deficit to five down, but promptly let Flint back in when he bogied the 23rd hole (5th).
Flint then started to drive the nails in Brown’s coffin with consecutive birdies on the 25th and 26th holes taking the scoreline back to seven holes. The match was over when Brown conceded the 29th hole for Flint to win 8/7.
