Furyk and Funk early leaders at PGA
IN: News | US PGA | US PGA Championship (2002) | Round One | 16 Aug 2002
The 2002 US PGA championship got off to a slow start when lightning and heavy rain forced a suspension in play of close to three hours. Play resumed, however, some players will be forced to finish their rounds tomorrow morning.
Americans Jim Furyk and Fred Funk lead the 84th US PGA championship's first round at -4 (68) but Tiger Woods is looming just three strokes off the pace despite bogeys at the 1st and 18th holes. Woods finished with -1 (71) alongside a group of players that included Tom Lehman, Angel Cabrera and Vijay Singh.
2002 British Open champ Ernie Els, who played the first round with Woods and David Toms, struggled around the course after a good start, to post an Even par (70) while defending champion David Toms, may well miss the cut if he doesn't fire in the second round after a disappointing 5 (77).
Australian Peter Lonard, who had a share of the lead coming up the 18th hole, dropped a shot to slip back into equal second at -3 (69) along with Justin Rose. Greg Norman is next best after Lonard at -1 after the 5th hole of play. A trio of players sit in equal 20th with Perks and Elkington already in the clubhouse at Even par and Adam Scott on his 3rd hole. Full wrap at the close of play......
