Gavin Flint heads first day of Queensland Amateur

IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Amateur Championship (2004) | Round One | 05 May 2004

The first two rounds of the Konica Minolta Queensland Amateur Championship were contested at Oxley Golf Club today.

Tomorrow's quarter-finals will be as follows
Paul Donahoo v Ritchie Gallichan
Ray Beaufils v Jason Day
Jon O'Sullivan v Ben Lammi
Gavin Flint v Justin Maker

On paper, the Flint - Maker match is looking like the standout. Flint is the defending Champion, as well as being the current NSW, Victorian and New Zealand Amateur Champion, while Maker is also a current State Team member, who was a quarter-finalist in the New Zealand Amateur Championship won by Flint last month.

O'Sullivan is also a previous winner of the Konica Minolta Queensland Amateur Champion, having won in 2001 at City Golf Club in Toowoomba. His opponent, Ben Lammi (Caboolture) is a current State Squad member, who is having his best result in this Championship.

The third quarter-final between Beaufils and Day will be a battle of the young lions. 16 year-old Day won the Australian Junior Championship in Canberra last month, while Beaufils - a year older, lead the Queensland Junior Team (including Day) to a magnificent victory in the Australian Junior Interstate Teams Matches (also in Canberra).

The leading qualifier Paul Donahoo will oppose New South Welshman Ritchie Gallichan in the final match. These two players have won their respective State Medals recently, and were decisive victors in their matches today.

Tennis Pro Scott Draper was defeated in his first round match by Tim Bray from the Gold Coast.
