Cruising mid-afternoon, at 8 up with 10 holes to play, it appeared that Jason Day – the 16 year-old Australian Junior Champion, was about to re-write the record books. Not only was he on the verge of becoming the youngest ever Queensland Amateur Champion, he was also looking at one of the biggest winning margins.

Then came an amazing run from his opponent 22-year-old Justin Maker, six years his senior, who won 5 of the next 6 holes (4 of the 5 with birdies), to reduce the deficit to 3 holes with four to play.

Day had been in control of the match from the very early stages, having won the 7th, 8th and 9th holes to get to 4 up, and then 12th, 13th and 14th to get to 6 up.

Maker’s run commenced at the 27th, where a birdie 2 reduced the margin to 7. Further birdies at the 28th, 29th, 30th and 32nd saw Day’s grip on the Championship loosen somewhat.

The 33rd hole was halved in bogey 5’s, which left Day 3 up with 3 holes to play, and left Maker with just a glimmer of hope.

A par to Maker on the 34th, against Day’s bogey, kept the match alive. Day was then in the position of having to halve on of the final two holes for victory.

The match concluded at the 35th, where Day made a par 4, to Maker’s bogey, for a 3 & 1 victory.
